Continuing from Part\n1<\/a> and Part 2<\/a> about\nour visit to Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shrine (\u4f0f\u898b\u7a32\u8377\u5927\u793e).....<\/span><\/p>\n\n

A short climb from the pretty lake mentioned in Part 1, you come,\nsurprisingly, across a couple<\/span> of small buildings, one a restaurant,<\/span>\nstraddling the path:<\/p>\n\n

We stopped for a juice, and to chat with the lady. She was 86<\/span>, and the\nfourth generation of her family to own\/run the little restaurant. The shrine<\/span> owns the land, but for whatever reason, the family has these\nbuildings. The building<\/span> across the path was her house; she had been born\nthere.<\/p>\n\n

I found out later, from another such living-on-the-mountain lady, that\nthere were 18 of these homesteads on shrine property. (The other lady was\n72 years old, and also been born in a little<\/span> house alongside the\ngate-filled path.)<\/p>\n\n

There were fox idols everywhere, usually decorated with a weather<\/span>-worn\nbib of some sort. I think<\/span> they represent guardians or the like, but there\nwere so many that I sometimes<\/span> felt worried that Moses would come smite the\nwhole place. These temple\/shrine things are cultural to me – not\nreligious – just as they are for most Japanese as well, but I suspect<\/span>\nthat at this location, there are more than usual for whom it is religious.\n(Regardless of my own feelings, I always<\/span> treat these places with respect; I\nwouldn't<\/span> want to offend those for whom it does have meaning.)<\/p>\n\n\n

I mentioned in Part 1 that you sometimes saw sets of orange gates off in\nthe distance; what I failed<\/span> to mention was the “distance” was sometimes\nvertical as well as lateral, so sometimes you got views like this:<\/p>\n\n

We were treated to this extra view because we left the beaten path (so\nto speak) to take a sub<\/span>-path to the geocache that I mentioned<\/span> in Part 1.<\/span> We were looking for The\nGuardian Fox cache<\/a>, hidden in 2003 by a couple<\/span> of guys from Kyoto. We found<\/span> it easily, just like at least (according to the logs at that link) 60\npeople before us....<\/p>\n\n

On the way to the shrine, we'd stopped by a store<\/span> and picked up a couple<\/span>\nof Hello Kitty keychain figurines, and a small<\/span> jar of Ramune<\/a> candies. We placed<\/span> these in the cache, and took back with us a few<\/span> things from among the small\ncollection inside. Anthony picked a small<\/span> keychain with a picture<\/span> of a\nChinese<\/span> vase, and a (pre-Euro) coin from what looks to be a European<\/span>\ncountry. I picked<\/span> a tiny<\/span> toy carabiner<\/a>\nthat I now<\/span> have clipped to my camera case.<\/p>\n\n

We carefully put everything back, and returned to the main path.<\/p>\n\n

Not far from the geocache is a crossroads where several paths cross, and\none of the few places we found that offered a nice<\/span> view of southern\nKyoto...<\/p>\n\n\n

(The elevated expressway you can see in the distance is the No. 2 Kyoto-Osaka Expressway<\/a> that I wrote<\/span> about\nlast year.)<\/p>\n\n

There were (like everywhere else) little sub-shrines all around,\nincluding at the junction area. I snapped<\/span> this next picture there, and I'm\nnot sure why because it really has nothing to offer, but for some reason, I really<\/span> like it...<\/p>\n\n

Having accomplished the goal of finding the geocache “treasure”, and lacking a map<\/span> or any particular idea on what to do next, I let Anthony<\/span> pick which path we should take from the crossroads. He picked<\/span> one that looked somewhat dark and foreboding....<\/p>\n\n

We eventually came upon a really interesting area that I'll have to\nwrite about another time, but let's just say that there were a lot<\/i>\nof foxes....<\/p>\n\n
