Today was our 10th<\/sup> wedding anniversary.<\/p>\n\n

It wasn't quite what I might have visualized 10 years ago – we\nwere all pretty tired, and even normally robust Anthony was a bit<\/span> under the\nweather – but Fumie and I got<\/span> here together, and that's what it's all\nabout.<\/p>\n\n

Her mom invited us for Happy-Anniversary pie (a pie<\/span> that Anthony felt the\nneed to put candles in)... <\/p>\n\n

You may well be wondering why an apple pie for a 10<\/span>th<\/sup> wedding\nanniversary, and why in the shape of a sea bream<\/a>. (You may also\nbe wondering “what is a sea<\/span> bream?”)<\/p>\n\n

To answer the last question first, a sea<\/span> bream is a fish<\/span> that looks like the pie above.<\/p>\n\n

Fumie's mom chose an apple pie because the shop she went to (near where\nshe grew up in another part of Kyoto) is well known for their apple pie.\nAfter having eaten it, I can understand<\/span> why... it was absolutely fantastic.<\/p>\n\n

As to why the shape of a fish, well, it's a play<\/span> on words. The name of<\/span>\nthe fish ( \u9bdb – tai<\/i> )<\/span> is pronounced\nthe same as the ending of one form of the word “auspicious”\n( \u304a\u76ee\u51fa\u5ea6\u3044 – omedetai<\/i> ),<\/span> and so in\nJapanese culture, the fish has somewhat become linked to auspicious events. In olden<\/span> days when food was the greatest currency, one would give an actual\nfish. These days, fish-shaped sweets are sometimes seen.<\/p>\n\n

Fish-shaped apple pies are apparently quite rare. Thanks, mom!<\/p>\n\n

I was thinking to take a picture of the 10 red roses that I got<\/span> for\nFumie, but today happened to have run across one of the first pictures I\ntook<\/span> with my D200<\/a>, and\nthought I'd just post it instead....<\/p>\n\n

Looking around for things to take pictures of after having unboxed the\ncamera, I didn't<\/span> really know how to use it, but snapped this picture of a\ndried<\/span> red rose sitting in a vase<\/span> on the kitchen counter. I like how<\/span> it came\nout. It was my<\/span> sixth shot with the camera.<\/p>\n\n

I like how the foreground light totally overshadows the background,\nmaking it unseen.<\/p>\n\n

I wonder if this isn't some kind of metaphor for marriage (or any\nrelationship), to concentrate on the bright foreground, not allowing subtle\ndistractions in the background from, er, distracting you.<\/p>\n\n
