I ended my previous post about day 2 of camping with\nAnthony<\/a> with the story that we'd returned from dinner in time for the\nsunset.<\/p>\n\n

When we got out of the car at the campsite, Anthony was playing with a\nsuperhero\ntoy<\/a> of some sort that he got at the store. (Because camping is special,\n“we” decided that he can get a small<\/span> $2 or $3 toy each day that we happen\nto go to a store<\/span> while camping.)<\/p>\n\n

A boy about his age was walking by with his mom, and made a comment<\/span>\nabout the toy. It turns<\/span> out that this was all the invitation that Anthony\nneeded to strike up a conversation<\/span> and friendship. This family (with four\nkids and a dog<\/span>) were the only others at the campground for most of the day,\nso I'd spent much of the day trying to get Anthony interested in playing\nwith the two boys that were about his age, but he was shy and showed\nshockingly little interest, even when one emerged from the surf with a\ngrotesque<\/span> pulsing squishy sea cucumber<\/a>\n(something that looks like a snail<\/span> without a shell,<\/span> but one the size of a\nlarge<\/span> sweet potato).<\/p>\n\n

So, finally they started talking. The mom kindly<\/span> offered to take Anthony\ndown to the beach while I put<\/span> stuff away in our tent, and I used<\/span> the\nopportunity to grab my camera as well....<\/p>\n\n\n

The ability to make friends is a great<\/span> thing about kids that adults\nwould do well to mimic. Anthony tends to be shy until something breaks the\nice, but then he's quick to make new friends.<\/p>\n\n

The boy next to Anthony in the shot above is Fuuta-kun, who is about the\nsame age as Anthony. His older<\/span> brother, Hinata-kun is about a year<\/span> older,\nand the little girl (along with her twin brother who was back at camp with\nhis daddy) is a week<\/span> shy of turning three years old.<\/p>\n\n

Anthony and the two boys were inseparable for the rest of the day, and\nmuch of the next.<\/p>\n\n
