Picking up my “Camping with Anthony<\/a>”\nstory (about my camping trip with Anthony to Kotobikihama beach, in northern\nKyoto Prefecture, Japan) from after the end of Day 1<\/a>....<\/p>\n\n

On the second day, the sun rose at 5:07am, and, unfortunately, that\nmeans that we did too.<\/p>\n\n

We decided to talk a walk along a path<\/span> to a big<\/span> hill we could see along\nthe coast, stopping by a big<\/span> beach in between that the path dipped down\nto.<\/p>\n\n

As I mentioned yesterday<\/a>, the\namount of yellow pollen dust that the pine trees produced was staggering.\nMaybe some clever bees enlisted a spider's<\/span> help to collect it. We saw these<\/span>\nyellow webs all over.<\/p>\n\n

While on the way back, we were passed by this man with a bucket<\/span> of some\nkind of edible seaweed.<\/p>\n\n

We followed him for a while thinking we were returning to camp, until I\nnoticed<\/span> on my GPS that we were going the wrong way and corrected ourselves. I realize<\/span> now by looking at the geoencoded\nlocation<\/a> that we were on a path<\/span> that curled away from camp toward a\nsmall<\/span> village.<\/p>\n\n

I always have my GPS\nunit<\/a> with me when I have<\/span> the camera, because I use<\/span> it to later\ngeoencode the photos (that is, to associate with a photo<\/span> the latitude,\nlongitude, and altitude at which it was taken, as well as a speed<\/span> and\nbearing, if moving), so it was fortuitous in this case to keep me from\ngetting lost.<\/p>\n\n

Unfortunately, it failed me for most of this trip, because of the six\ndays of the camping trip, it inexplicably saved no tracklog for days 3, 4,\nand 5, so I lost<\/span> the ability to accurately geoencode all those photos. This\nis really disappointing, but worse, since Garmin has no idea why it might\nhave happened, I have no<\/span> faith that it won't randomly happen again. (It's\nhappened to me before, but this was the first time that I could<\/span> absolutely\nrule out user error, since I didn't<\/span> really interact with the unit during\nthe whole trip, other than to turn it on and off as I used<\/span> the camera.)<\/p>\n\n

Garmin responded quickly when I wrote<\/span> them about it, and they're\nchecking into it, but not having heard of this issue before, I don't<\/span> hold\nmuch hope that they'll come up with a fix.<\/span> \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n\n
