Driving by Nijo Castle today, I remembered<\/span> that I hadn't<\/span> really posted\nmuch yet from my previous\nvisit there<\/a> (which was my first visit, which is embarrassing to admit\nbecause I've lived in or near Kyoto for 12 years).<\/p>\n\n

So, here are some pictures of the main gate, a huge,<\/span> heavy, thick wooden\ndoor augmented with bands of steel.<\/p>\n\n

The wide-angle lens I used to achieve the picture above camouflages the\nsheer size of the door. Note the small opening at left, and the size of\nsomeone sitting just outside the door.<\/p>\n\n

This shot of the other side of the doors gives a better<\/span> sense of the\nsize, although it lacks the glow of the ones above because it's completely\nshielded from the setting sun.<\/p>\n\n

Earlier in my visit, when the doors were open and the more highly\ndecorated outside face was actually facing in toward the sun, I took this<\/span>\nshot, which might make a nice<\/span> desktop background, so I've provided those\nversions as well....<\/p>\n\n

The doors are so heavy that over the years it appears that they've\nstarted to sag under their own weight, and now little wedges have been\nadded under the doors to make them appear – at least at first glance\n– less saggy.<\/p>\n\n
