After a stupendous\nmoment in the sun<\/a>, the common white cherry blossom has all but\nevaporated from Kyoto, but there are still plenty of other varieties of\ncherry tree (and other tree, I suppose<\/span>) in full bloom or just starting to\nblossom. The weeping\ncrimson at the old imperial palace<\/a> are one example, but there are\nplenty more, such as this tree full of fluffy pink I came<\/span> across on the way\nhome from Mass on Sunday. They were so nice, I had to<\/span> return with my\ncamera...<\/p>\n\n

I like how in the photo above you can see all the various stages: bud,\nunfolding blossom, and fully-expanded blossom. These reminded me somewhat\nof the late-blooming blossoms from 10 Gallons of Blossoms on a\n5-Gallon Branch<\/a>, but these were more delicate and airy, less bunched.<\/p>\n\n

The green of a neighboring willow tree made for pretty contrast...<\/p>\n\n

I wondered how they compared to the aforementioned “10 Gallons”\nblossoms, so I stopped<\/span> by on my way back to check them out. They were much\nfurther behind the curve, probably hitting full bloom some time in a week<\/span>\nor two...<\/p>\n\n

While there, I noticed<\/span> Aotan, the great blue heron that's trained the\nowners of a local<\/span> building to feed him (as seen in Lunch with a Great<\/span> Blue\nHeron<\/a>), waiting at his normal spot...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first floor of this building is the Reina de Reina<\/i> Mexican\nrestaurant, which is unlike any Mexican restaurant in America in that its\nfood is excellent. Really, really top notch. Fumie took me there the other\nday for my birthday, and just as it was when I was<\/span> there before, the food\nwas absolutely superb. If you have<\/span> a chance<\/span> to visit this\narea<\/a>, I highly<\/span> recommend it.<\/p>\n\n

A few moments after taking this picture, a couple<\/span> and their three young\nkids exited the restaurant, and not knowing there was a huge<\/span> gray bird just\noutside the door (and not expecting there was a huge<\/span> gray bird just outside\nthe door), all parties – human and fowl – were somewhat\nstartled. The humans<\/span> reacted by taking a step<\/span> back, while the bird reacted\nby flying to the roof one floor above.<\/p>\n\n
