A preface to today's post: I have two monitors<\/a>, one that's\nreally good (a mid<\/span>-level Eizo LCD), and one that's on the high end of\nnormal (a Dell<\/span> LCD). The intense<\/span> colors of the cranes make today's pictures\nlook amazing<\/i> on the Eizo, but they're utterly bland and pedestrian\non the more consumer-oriented monitor. Oh well.<\/p>\n\n

As I mentioned<\/a> the\nother day, we recently made a trip<\/span> to the Tanigumisan Kegonji Temple\nseveral hours away in Gifu. In the picture<\/span> above, you can see Anthony\nstanding under the gate, just to the right of the leftmost tall white\nbanner. Behind and around him are large bundles of strings of origami\ncranes.<\/p>\n\n

It's likely that the larger bundles each have 1,000 cranes. The current\nWikipedia\nentry for senbatzuru<\/i><\/a> has a nice<\/span> writeup about the practice.<\/p>\n\n

When not in bundles of exactly 1,000, they're probably simple offerings\nfor world peace. In Japanese<\/span> culture, origami cranes have very strong\nconnotations of peace.<\/p>\n\n
