Zak<\/a> sent me an\narticle about some planned large-scale redevelopment around Kyoto Station,\nwhich reminds me that I've still not followed up on my earlier post about\nthe area: The\nMost-Excellent Architecture of Kyoto Station<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

When I snapped the picture above, I was standing<\/span> in the huge atrium that\nis the shell around which Kyoto Station was designed. Beyond the glass oval\nthing in the center are the ticket gates, beyond which are the trains.\nAbove the ticket gates is a glass<\/span>-enclosed walkway connecting one area of\nthe station with some restaurants and a hotel.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I really like the glass oval thing. When standing there, you can look up\nand around at 10-stories worth of atrium above you, and look down at two\nstories worth of diving escalators and walkways below.<\/p>\n\n

You really have to look at the picture above in its larger\ndetail<\/a> to appreciate the scale here. The glass<\/span> oval thing is in the\nlower center-left, with the ticket gates at the far lower-left.<\/p>\n\n

If you cross the atrium and go up a number<\/span> of floors on the other side,\nto near the big Christmas Tree (I took<\/span> these shots last fall), you can look\ndown past multiple levels of restaurant, each with its own set of people\nlooking down at the lower levels as well.<\/p>\n\n

Turning back and moving around to the front of the Christmas Tree....<\/p>\n\n

If you don't want to walk up all those stairs, you can take the\nescalators. The escalators<\/span> go at normal speed, but it still takes almost\ntwo and a half<\/span> minutes to get to the top from this point. It's\nfar<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n

It's hard to see, but there's actually a publicly<\/span>-accessible suspended\nwalkway cutting across the top of the frame above.<\/p>\n\n

I think I was on one of those far escalators when I took<\/span> the “Wide-Angle\nView from the Left” picture above.<\/p>\n\n

I took some of these pictures while out and about with the family, and a\nfew<\/span> others on the spur of the moment one evening after returning from a trip to\nTokyo<\/a>. As such, getting photos was an afterthought, so I'd really like\nto go back and spend some quality time exploring with the camera. There are\nso many areas of the station I've yet to see. For example, while writing\nthis post I noticed<\/span> what looks like a huge<\/span> lobby of a hotel<\/span> visible through\nhuge 2nd-floor windows in the upper-left of the first “View from the Right”\nphoto above.
