Another day, another 826 pictures. Thank goodness that I decided<\/span> to\ncatch up a bit<\/span> on email this morning rather than photograph the start of the Kyoto City Half\nMarathon<\/a>, or I would<\/span> have had even more photos to deal with.<\/p>\n\n

As part of the festivities surrounding the half marathon, which starts\nand ends right here south of the Heian Shrine, the Kyoto Prefectural\nMounted Police allowed kids between 4 and fourth grade to get a horse<\/span> ride.\nFumie's mom, who watched Anthony while Fumie and I were<\/span> in\nKanazawa<\/a> took him over. Unbeknownst to him, I followed<\/span> along with my long lens<\/a>\nto capture the event. It was right<\/span> in the park where Anthony likes to\nride his bike, shown all snowy at the end of this post from two\nweeks ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

He was excited about the prospect of a horse<\/span> ride, but I knew<\/span> that he'd\nbe apprehensive. Indeed, you can see the consternation on his face as his\nturn approaches...<\/p>\n\n

From start to finish, his time on the horse lasted 60 seconds. Chatting\nwith him later, he said that he wasn't scared of the horse, but of\nfalling off<\/i> the horse. I pointed<\/span> out that the police officer had\nbeen holding on to him, to which he replied (rightly, I see,<\/span> now that I\nreview<\/span> the photos) “yeah, but only a little<\/span> bit.”<\/p>\n\n

A moment after dismounting, he had to cross the path of the horse to get\nout, and being a police<\/span> program, good traffic safety was being observed. I rarely<\/span> see it any more, but all kids used to raise their hands as they\ncrossed the street, to make themselves more visible. Seeing them have\nAnthony do this was a throwback<\/span> to the days of old....<\/p>\n\n

At this point I came out of stealth mode, and Obaachan saw me and pointed\nhim my way, and when he saw me he broke into both a run<\/span> and a smile.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n\n

The little kid ran by as we watched Anthony ride his bike. I figured<\/span> that I should<\/span> show at least one picture of a runner,<\/span> so there you go. All runners<\/span> received a bottle<\/span> of water and a banana<\/span> at the finish, so the kid\nwent to his dad to get his banana.<\/p>\n\n

Finally, my obligatory\nshot-down-the-middle-of-the-road-with-a-shrine-in-the-background,\nessentially an identical shot to this Road to the Heian\nShrine<\/a> picture from two weeks ago, but with more zoom, less snow, and a\nlot<\/span> more people:<\/p>\n\n

In the afternoon, I attended<\/span> a ballet<\/span> recital of a bunch<\/span> of kids ranging\nfrom four years old through high school, including one of Anthony's\nclassmates, Monet<\/a>. It was adorable<\/span>, and the resulting 584 photos accounts for the bulk of the\nday's images.<\/p>\n\n

Then, for my third photo event of the day, I photographed<\/span> some pages\nfrom Monet's great great great grandfather's bible that record the births,\ndeaths, and marriages of several generations of her ancestors on her dad's\nside. After not getting satisfactory results on his own, Arthur (Monet's\ndad) asked me to give it a shot.<\/span> We'll see how they came out....<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
