The cold that I've had for the last couple of weeks has finally started\nto subside, which is good timing (finally!) because it allowed us to make a\ntrip<\/span> we've been planning for a while,<\/span> an overnight a few<\/span> hours north by\ntrain to Kanazawa, to see Japanese pop singer Kousuke Atari (\u4e2d\u5b5d\u4ecb<\/span><\/a>) in concert\nagain. (We've also seen him in Miyajima<\/a>, twice in Tokyo<\/a>, in\nOsaka, and in\nTakamatsu<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, earlier today I was killing time in the hotel lobby after we\nchecked out when applause erupted from the hotel's “wedding chapel”, and\nthe couple above emerged. Even at f<\/span>\/1.4 and ISO<\/span> 800, the darkness called for a\n1<\/sup>\/<\/big>45 sec exposure (much too slow for 85mm), but I\nlike<\/span> how it came out nevertheless. I have no<\/span> idea who they are, but they\ncertainly look happy.<\/p>\n\n

The lady in the simple red kimono is the bridesmade in the most literal\nsense: she's hotel staff who walks the bride (figuratively, and often\nliterally) through the events of the wedding, from the dressing through to\nthe end of the formal reception. Except for when the bride is walking down\nthe aisle, the bridesmade\n\n– hanayome kaizoenin<\/i> \u82b1\u5ac1\u4ecb\u6dfb\u4eba<\/span> –\n\nis never more than a step<\/span> or two away, thus (hopefully) ensuring a\nstress<\/span>-free event for the bride.<\/p>\n\n

To my knowledge, no such counterpart exists for a Japanese<\/span> groom, who is\nexpected to show up, smile, and keep quiet. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n

I was panning on the three friends shown above as they walked to the\nelevators that would take them to the formal reception, when I snapped<\/span> a\npicture<\/span> just as the pan moved over a bright<\/span> sign in the background. I was already<\/span> snapping the picture as I noticed<\/span> the sign, so I didn't<\/span> have time\nto adjust the exposure to ignore the background brightness. I thought<\/span> for\nsure it'd be a throw<\/span>-away shot, and I'm probably right, but somehow I like<\/span>\nthe effect, and the (fuzzy) detail on the back of the kimono:<\/p>\n\n

Since I'm showing pictures of random people I don't<\/span> know, I'll include\ntwo that I took<\/span> earlier in the day while sitting at a window<\/span> in the hotel\ncoffee shop, watching people go by. I was mostly<\/span> fiddling with my camera,\npracticing focusing quickly, but as I was<\/span> tracking this couple, I was struck<\/span> by the man's nice smile, so I fired<\/span> off a frame.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

She soon turned and joined him in looking at me with a big<\/span> smile. I\ndidn't<\/span> realize that he'd been smiling at me<\/i> (not having realized\nthat they could even see me through the reflections that were certainly\nthere). I wish I<\/span> could send them a copy<\/span> of the shot.<\/p>\n\n

I'm not real big on street photography, so in the future I'll leave this\nkind of stuff to Zak<\/a>. His most recent<\/span> post, though, of some toddlers in a communal<\/span>\nbuggy<\/a> prompts me to post a shot<\/span> I happen<\/span> to have taken yesterday\nmorning, before leaving for Kanazawa:<\/p>\n\n

It's common to see kids – from infants to maybe two years old\n– being wheeled around in buggies like this, sometimes six or eight\nin the larger ones. It's a safe<\/span> way for playcare teachers to get them out\nand about, and I find<\/span> it absolutely adorable every time I see<\/span> it. In the shot<\/span> above, I love how<\/span> the “bigger” kids (who can't yet be two years old)\nare “helping” the teacher push.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
