I'm still sick, so today's post is a simple<\/span> continuation of yesterday's snowy visit to the Heian\nShrine<\/a>, today focusing mostly on the gardens, except for this next picture:<\/p>\n\n

You can see how little snow there was, compared to the amazing shots last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The rest of the pictures are from inside the gardens, which costs 600\nyen (US $6) to enter per adult. Anthony got in free. We were the<\/span> first to\nenter, the two photographers behind us immediately ran to the far\ngardens, while we took a more<\/span> leisurely pace.<\/p>\n\n

Many areas of the gardens have bamboo lattice that support the “crimson\nweeping-willow cherry trees” that populate the grounds. (I don't<\/span> know their\nname in English, but the Japanese is benishidarezakura<\/i> – \u7d05\u679d\u5782\u685c.)<\/span>\n\nIn a few<\/span> months, these lattice will be supporting a heavy<\/span> burden of\nintense pink. Today, they supported only a layer<\/span> of snow.<\/p>\n\n

It's hard to believe when looking at pictures like this – just as\nit's hard to believe when you're there – that this shrine is right in\nthe city. There's a major<\/span> street 60 yards away, the huge intersection of\nMarutamachi and Higashiooji is just two tenths of a mile<\/span> away, and my own\nhouse is less than four tenths of a mile<\/span> away. When you're there, you feel\nlike you're a million<\/span> miles away from it all.<\/p>\n\n

I was disappointed that the two photographers who had run ahead of us\nhad marred the snow in this tiny bridge. At five years<\/span> old, Anthony's\nnatural inclination is, naturally, to indulge in anything that involves\nsmashing ice or snow, but especially in the gardens, we've encouraged him\nto preserve the beauty as is. It's a balance<\/span> between letting a kid<\/span> be a\nkid,<\/span> and respect for nature and for others' enjoyment of it, but in gardens\nlike this, “respect” certainly wins.<\/p>\n\n

So, to not make it worse, we had him step into the footprints that were there, and we made sure he understood why.<\/p>\n\n

The little bridge was the start of a long<\/span> path the runs across the back\nof the property, connecting one area of gardens to another. On it, we met a\nshrine<\/span> worker with a broom<\/span> and dustpan...<\/p>\n\n

The long path lets out at the main set of gardens, none of which have\nshown up in pictures on my blog yet. All those<\/span> from yesterday and today are\nfrom the minor western gardens. We'll see some of the main gardens\ntomorrow, if my cold allows...<\/p>\n\n
