With a forecast for snow all night, I was disappointed<\/span> to wake up to\nfind less accumulation than we had the other day (Amazing Snow at the Heian\nShrine<\/a>), which itself wasn't really all that much. In fact, it was\nsunny out. Still, we all went for a walk,<\/span> and despite no prognosis for\ngood photography, I brought<\/span> along the camera and tried to make the best of\nit.<\/p>\n\n

It was clear that it was going to be an unphotogenic time when we\narrived at the bridge featured in yesterday's Snowy Bridge in Kyoto<\/a> to\nfind only a light<\/span> dusting of snow.<\/p>\n\n

There wasn't much traffic at 8am Sunday morning, so I could<\/span> stand in\nthe middle of the street and look through the legs of the Main Gate of the\nHeian Shrine, down to the shrine's main entrance (the one seen in this Photoshop and New Year's\nCards<\/a> post). Luckily, an ugly delivery truck was parked right where it\nwould spruce up this otherwise boring shot:<\/p>\n\n

Anthony and I had headed out a few minutes before Mommy, so when Anthony saw her coming, he ran back to greet her.\n(The sun was coming and going behind clouds, so the lighting was ever changing, and was more wintery-gloomy in this shot.)<\/p>\n\n\n

Growing up in the snow of Ohio, I am used<\/span> to seeing snow plastered on\nsigns by snow plows, but I'm not used to seeing it stick to vertical\nsurfaces on its own, so it was odd to see this morning that pretty much all\nwest-facing surfaces had a layer<\/span> of snow.<\/p>\n\n

We went into the shrine area, and this time we could go into the\ngardens; we were first in line, followed by a professional<\/span> photographer,\nand another guy with an SLR.<\/p>\n\n

The photos from the gardens will likely occupy my next dozen or so\nposts, so for today I'll share just the one seen at the top of this post,\nand this shot that Anthony took of me on one of the paths between\ngardens...<\/p>\n\n

Having recently lost my nice winter hat, I was forced<\/span> to use earmuffs\nand a floppy<\/span> summer hat, which pushed my normally high dorkiness factor\nthrough the roof. Thus, you'll appreciate that unlike the photo leading\nthis post, the one of me is not<\/i> available as a desktop<\/span>\nbackground.<\/p>\n\n

While we were in the gardens, it started snowing again. Back on the street, here's another view of the main entrance...<\/p>\n\n

We couldn't stop but lick our lips at the sight of this Baikal delivery\ntruck:<\/p>\n\n

Baikal<\/a> is a high<\/span>-end sweets\nand cake shop, so we could easily imagine what delicious joys the truck was\nfull of. The driver<\/span> was parked at the side of the road, enjoying something\nhot from a thermos,<\/span> taking in the snowy view of the shrine entrance seen\nabove.<\/p>\n\n

Back at the “Snowy Bridge”, we saw this lady taking advantage of a lull<\/span>\nin traffic to set up a shot<\/span> of the shrine gate in the middle of the\ncrosswalk.<\/p>\n\n

The photographer in me could only commiserate, and I quickly<\/span>\njumped to get a picture<\/span> of her taking a picture.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

Returning to the warmth of home, my camera lens immediately fogged up\nand I couldn't<\/span> see a thing<\/span> through it, but I think<\/span> this picture\nnevertheless captures the essence of a cold,<\/span> tired boy returning from\nplaying in the snow.<\/p>\n\n

I felt wonderful while I was out there, but half an hour after\nreturning, I started<\/span> feeling a cold<\/span> coming on quickly, and so the rest of\nthe day has been unfun. It doesn't take too much energy to sit like a couch<\/span>\npotato in front of the computer, and hence, we have this post.<\/p>\n\n
