I've been posting a lot of the same stuff lately (snow, Heian Shrine,\nand shots from Amami), so I thought<\/span> I'd mix things up and revisit some\nolder files in my library. I often<\/span> get caught up in new events, leaving\nmany shots I want<\/span> to share to languish in my library until I find<\/span> a chance<\/span>\nto get back to them. So today, I randomly<\/span> picked a day<\/span> from last year to\nrevisit, and it turns out to be June 3rd, which was the first day of Aunt Jeannette's visit to\nKyoto<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The shot above contains a temple pagoda – the Taisan Temple's Koan\nPagoda – but in “Where's Waldo” fashion, it's not obvious\nuntil you see it the first time. Here's a zoom<\/span> that might help:<\/p>\n\n

These are views of the pagoda from the Kiyomizu\nTemple<\/a>, which was the first stop on the first day of Aunt Jeannette's\ntour in Kyoto. Other shots were included here<\/a> and here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

On the way out, I came across<\/span> these two school pals with matching Hello Kitty purses:<\/p>\n\n

Later, the tour went to the Heian Shrine, and visited the gardens that I\nmentioned<\/span> in yesterday's\npost<\/a> about the amazing\nsnow<\/a> the other day. The gardens<\/span> don't cover much area, but are very\nnicely done, and they feel huge.<\/p>\n\n

The Heian Shrine is a popular place for wedding ceremonies; there are a\nfew<\/span> related pics in my Weddings and the Heian\nShrine<\/a> post.<\/p>\n\n

Later in the day, the tour group visited a tea<\/span> house in Gion where they\nwere treated to sweets made and served by Master Sweet Maker Ji'ichiro\nKunieta<\/a>. I took this<\/span> picture of a lady<\/span> on a bridge<\/span> from the window of\nthe second floor of the tea house:<\/p>\n\n

It's right in the heart of Gion, but it looks like the middle of\nnowhere. The lady in<\/span> the picture above is standing pretty much in the exact\nspot that the first picture on Night Cherry Blossoms in the\nGion area of Kyoto<\/a> was taken. Two other<\/span> night shots taken in the\nimmediate vicinity are here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Generally, photography can be difficult in Gion (and most of Japan) due\nto all the utility poles\nand wires<\/a>. Ugly.<\/p>\n\n

On the walk home, I passed<\/span> the site where a house<\/span> had been taken down,\nand you could see in the old, dilapidated side of the house next door the\nshape of the roof where some part of the razed house had been attached.<\/p>\n\n

As Zak explains in his History in (of) a Roof<\/span><\/a> post,\nyou can read a lot<\/span> of history in the shapes, colors, and construction of\nold walls.<\/p>\n\n

The construction in this case is the same wood veneer over bamboo and\nmud walls seen in my Old\nHouse of Bamboo and Mud<\/a>, but you can see much of the same kind of\nhistory in a brick<\/span> wall<\/a>\nas well.<\/p>\n\n

Continuing on the walk, I came across<\/span> these flowers growing wildly on\nthe bank of the stream that runs by our place, among the weeds. The photo<\/span> isn't particularly great, but the flowers are pretty.<\/p>\n\n
