On the last day of our New Year's trip to the Amami Islands in southern\nJapan<\/a> (all Amami\nposts<\/a>), we went for a canoe<\/span> ride among the Mangroves<\/a> that grow in\none spot, on the mid-eastern coast of the main Amami Ooshima island, where fresh water from a river<\/span> mixes with the salt water of the East China Sea.<\/p>\n\n

Fumie took on the role of Guest Services<\/i>, and I was<\/span> Propulsion\nand Documentation<\/i>. (That is, she held Anthony while I paddled<\/span> and\noccasionally tried to take a picture<\/span> with one hand while trying to not drop\nthe oar with the other.)<\/p>\n\n

The tide swings here were something like six feet, and we where there\nsomewhere toward the lower end. From the color on the trees, the water got\nanother four or so feet higher. The exposed<\/span> roots were creepy.<\/p>\n\n

The exposed roots and trunks were covered with what at first looked like\ncaked on mud, but it was actually a very<\/span> delicate bark.<\/p>\n\n

We went with a group of others, along with a guide,<\/span> and paddled about\n3km over the course of an hour. It was quite<\/span> nice, although difficult to\nuse the camera with only one hand. I'm glad that<\/span> I didn't<\/span> drop it (or us)\nin the water. It was also<\/span> a nice<\/span> bonus that it didn't rain while we were on\nthe water.<\/p>\n\n
