(<span class='nobr'>A NEF<\/span> file has <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-12-08\/303\">two embedded JPGs<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n<p>Because <a href=\"\/blog\/2007-10-08\/598\"><span class='nobr'>I shoot<\/span> raw<\/a>,\nthe only practical effect for me is that <span class='nobr'>I get<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a black<\/span> frame when <span class='nobr'>I try<\/span> to\nreview the images on the camera LCD, but someone shooting in JPG mode would\nfind all their images completely blank. Yikes!<\/p>\n\n<p>This happened to me for the second time yesterday, but this time <span class='nobr'>I\nbelieve<\/span> I've figured it out.<\/p>\n\n<p>It turns out that the D200's white balance setting can be set to <span class='nobr'>a\nwhite<\/span>-balance preset that has not yet been defined, and when this happens,\nyou get the Black Frame Syndrome. <span class='nobr'>The raw file<\/span> is saved with the\nwhite-balance notation as if automatic white balance had been selected, but\nthe non-existent preset is used for the JPG engine, yielding <span class='nobr'>a blank<\/span>\nframe.<\/p>\n\n<p>Thus, if you find yourself suffering from &#8220;Black Frame Syndrome&#8221;, check\nthat your white-balance setting is not &#8220;Pre&#8221; (or, not one of the five &#8220;Pre&#8221;\nsettings that's not yet defined).<\/p>\n\n<p>The white-balance setting is adjusted with the thumb-wheel while holding\ndown the &#8220;WB&#8221; button, and it turns out that <span class='nobr'>I sometimes<\/span> hit that by\naccident when <span class='nobr'>I intend<\/span> to hit the ISO button next to it. <span class='nobr'>It's my fault<\/span> for\nusing the wrong control, of course, but it's certainly <span class='nobr'>a camera<\/span> firmware\nbug that it allows you to use <span class='nobr'>a white<\/span>-balance preset that hasn't been\nset.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I reported a couple of months ago about a Black Frame Syndrome affecting my D200, whereby the raw image data was fine, but the embedded jpg previews were all black.
