Our New-Year's trip to the Amami Islands<\/a> in southern Japan consisted of two\nnights on the main Amami-Ooshima island, followed by two nights on the much\nsmaller, much more sparsely-populated next island south, Kakeroma-jima (\u30ab\u30b1\u30ed\u30de\u5cf6, the\nisland outlined in blue on the second map of my initial post<\/a>). The land area<\/span> covers the size of a large<\/span> city, but it has a population<\/span> of only about\n1,000.<\/p>\n\n

We stayed at Horizon Club<\/b>, a “pension” (bed and breakfast) near\nthe eastern ferry port. (Horizon Club – \u30db\u30e9\u30a4\u30be\u30f3\u30af\u30e9\u30d6: web site<\/a> · blog<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n

The location consists of a small two-room lodge, and three little\ncottages, one of\nwhich<\/a> was ours. There's nothing to do anywhere nearby except relax, and\nperhaps go fishing or scuba diving (the latter being a popular<\/span> reason for\npeople to visit the island).<\/p>\n\n

Dinner and breakfast come with the room.<\/p>\n\n

The dinners were extravagant... exceptional.... just amazing in every\ndimension: presentation, variety, volume, and taste, all prepared by the\nproprietress<\/a> who had no formal cooking training before she decided to\nleave the rat race and start the pension on this remote island six years\nago. She does more<\/span> than just the cooking: she and her husband built the place\nthemselves<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I neglected to take any photos of the dinners (what was I\nthinking!<\/span>?<\/i>) but they easily surpassed those of our previous New-Year's\ntrip (see Food at a\nJapanese<\/span> Seaside Ryokan<\/a>). The only negative<\/span> I can<\/span> say about Horizon\nClub's dinner is that the variety and volume were so great that I'm certain\nit would be physically impossible for someone to actually eat everything\nprovided.<\/p>\n\n

One evening, we were even treated to an impromptu shamisen<\/a> performance by\nthe nine-year-old daughter of the cook's helper (seen in the orange vest in\nthese year-old\npictures<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n

Breakfasts were less elaborate, but still wonderful presentations.<\/p>\n\n

The most amazing thing about these meals, besides that they're provided\nin the middle of nowhere, is that they are essentially free. The same meals<\/span>\nmost anywhere else in Japan would cost more than the entire $80-per-person\nroom and<\/i> board fee charged by Horizon Club. Most Excellent.<\/p>\n\n

As you can see from the satellite\nview<\/a>, there's not a whole<\/span> lot around the place (or anywhere on the\nentire island, for that matter). Stepping across the road from the\ndriveway, you can look out across the water to the bigger island directly\nto the north.<\/p>\n\n
