{"id":689,"date":"2008-01-13T20:06:43","date_gmt":"2008-01-13T11:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2008-01-13\/689"},"modified":"2008-01-13T20:06:43","modified_gmt":"2008-01-13T11:06:43","slug":"cultural-awareness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2008-01-13\/689","title":{"rendered":"Cultural Awareness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n<p>Anthony overheard the word &#8220;culture&#8221; (<i>bunka<\/i> &ndash;\n<span class='nobr'>\u6587\u5316)<\/span> during <span class='nobr'>a conversation<\/span> between me and Fumie, and asked what it meant. <span class='nobr'>It's a difficult<\/span> concept for <span class='nobr'>a five<\/span> year old, but <span class='nobr'>I tried<\/span> to explain <span class='nobr'>a bit,<\/span>\nthen gave the example that one doesn't wear shoes at home in Japan, but\nthey do in America.<\/p>\n\n<p>He thought about it for a bit, and as it set in, he said in the most\nincredulous tone of voice: &#8220;<i>they wear shoes <b>inside<\/b> the\nhouse?<\/i>&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>I said yes.<\/p>\n\n<p>His reply to that was the single word &#8220;<i>why?<\/i>&#8221;,\nbut if only <span class='nobr'>I could<\/span> possibly convey the tone of his voice and the look on\nhis face as he said it. <span class='nobr'>It gets one<\/span> only <span class='nobr'>a short<\/span> way there to imagine that\nhe actually said \"<i>for the love of all things holy, who on earth would be\nthat <b>freaking<\/b> moronic?<\/i>\"<\/p>\n\n<p>I couldn't disagree with him, but anyway, that's often the case with\ncultural differences. Also the case is that it tends to make more sense\ndoing as the Romans when you're actually in Rome.
