As I mentioned on my Amami Islands<\/a> post, it was\nreally really<\/i> really<\/b> windy for the first few days of our\nNew-Year's visit to Amami Island (\u5944\u7f8e\u5927\u5cf6)<\/span> in the East China Sea in the far south\nof Japan. The airport<\/span> is near the Kasari-cho area (the north-east part of\nthe island) where Fumie's grandmother lived until a teenager,<\/span> and in\nexploring that area after we arrived, we found ourselves at a deserted<\/span>\nlighthouse at the most northern tip of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n

I don't suppose that the picture above really shows the whipping wind\nvery well, but it was truly impressive. There weren't the torrential rains\nand crazy-large waves as with a typhoon.<\/span>.. it was just really really REALLY\nwindy, and you could watch the wind carve ever-changing patterns on the\nsurface of the slow-moving (relatively speaking) waves.<\/p>\n\n

The wind wasn't particularly gusty... it was just there, like sticking\nyour head out the window of a car.<\/span> A really<\/span> fast car.<\/p>\n\n

The little two-story lighthouse building had a walkaround<\/span> on the\noutside. The pictures<\/span> of me leaning into the wind were taken by Fumie while\nshe was standing in the (relatively) calm southern side protected by the\nbuilding. Besides offering the ability for Fumie to stand unassisted, that\nlocation also offered the largest area for us to take a picture<\/span> in.<\/p>\n\n

Walking forward (North) from where I am<\/span> standing in the picture was a\nconsiderable<\/span> task without the aid of the little concrete wall. But the worst<\/span> wind – far far<\/i> stronger than where I'm standing in the\npictures – was at the next corner of the building 20 feet in front of\nme. It's at a<\/span> point where the wind is rushing up the side of the cliff from\nthe ocean and pounding directly into the face of the lighthouse, thereby\ngetting forced at molten speeds around that edge. When I tried<\/span> to make my\nway around that little corner of the walkway, the wind got under my eyelids\nin the same way you see it puffing out the jacket in the first picture\nabove. I felt as<\/span> if I were<\/span> sitting on the wing of a jet<\/span> at 30,000 feet.<\/p>\n\n

The extremely odd (and fairly painful) feeling of wind under your eyelid\naside, the whole visit was really fun.<\/p>\n\n

As we were leaving it started to rain, which turned “really fun” into\n“really awful”, but once we proceeded a few<\/span> steps down the path from the\nlighthouse, the wind was less of a physical<\/span> danger and we could get back to\nthe car pretty quickly, especially with Anthony going piggy-back on me\n(while I held<\/span> onto his shoes, lest the wind take them: that was a real<\/span>\nconcern that we discovered moments after the last picture above was\ntaken).<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
