Anthony served at Mass for the first time today, at a Mass<\/span> said by Fr.\nGraham McDonnell, who says an English Mass once a month<\/span> at the Catholic\nchurch we attend (the Kyoto Kawaramachi Cathedral, which is the same church\nthat I got<\/span> married in almost 10 years ago).<\/p>\n\n

Anthony had been begging to do it for months, but it took until today\nuntil our schedule matched up with Fr. McDonnell's, so by the time we got\nthere, he was quite excited.<\/p>\n\n

We'd arrived early so that Fr. McDonnell could take Anthony out to the\naltar and give some basic instructions so Anthony would know what to\nexpect. It was a<\/span> lot of information in a short<\/span> time, and I'm sure that\nAnthony was totally bewildered, but he tried to follow along like a\ntrooper.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

One of the tasks for the altar boys here is to light a candle<\/span> before the\nGospel is read. Anthony had never touched a match<\/span> before, so Fr. McDonnell\ntried to show him how to do it.<\/p>\n\n

It proved too difficult a task in the little time allowed, so Father figured a way<\/span>\naround Anthony having to do it.<\/p>\n\n

Later, Father was instructing Anthony in some of his tasks that I\nwouldn't<\/span> be able to see during the actual Mass, so I took<\/span> the opportunity\nto get a better<\/span> angle on the goings on behind the altar...<\/p>\n\n

Father said that I could take whatever pictures I liked<\/span> during Mass, but\nI felt<\/span> that I should<\/span> exercise a least<\/span> some restraint, so I didn't<\/span> employ my\nnormal “carpet bombing” photographic technique. Still, I did get<\/span> a few<\/span>\nwell-timed shots.<\/p>\n\n

Anthony's friend Joe was there also, so luckily, Anthony didn't have to\ngo it alone on his first time. Joe is three<\/span> months older than Anthony, but\nhas been serving Mass since his sister's baptism<\/a> six\nmonths ago, so he's an old pro at it.<\/p>\n\n

When Mass started and Anthony was on the altar looking out at the\nno-longer empty congregation, he was clearly a bit<\/span> nervous about what he'd\ngotten himself into....<\/p>\n\n

He did an excellent job, without all the fidgeting that accompanied the\nmany times I served<\/span> as a kid.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The candle-lighting problem was solved by leaving the candles to be lit\nnear the priest's chair, and him lighting them. (At 80 years old, Fr.\nMcDonnell understandably prefers not having to run around the altar too\nmuch). After being lit, the kids were then to carry the candles over to the\nlectern. I liked<\/span> this picture of them picking up the candles.<\/p>\n\n\n

The boys stood in one place (shown above) during much of the Eucharistic\nPrayer, which is a tall<\/span> order for two five-year-old boys. At one point<\/span>, Joe idly placed<\/span> one foot on the step above for a moment.<\/span> Anthony noticed this,\nand was unsure whether it was something he was supposed to duplicate, so he\ntentatively did the same while keeping a close<\/span> eye on Joe...<\/p>\n\n

I thought the moment was adorable, as was the whole thing.<\/p>\n\n

When Mass was over, I made sure<\/span> Anthony knew how proud I was<\/span> of him, and\nthanked Joe for being such a great<\/span> lead in helping show Anthony what to\ndo.<\/p>\n\n

Anthony and I came home and spent much of the afternoon playing with the\ntrain stuff he got for Christmas (that added to what he got for his birthday<\/a>),\nwhich is another story in itself...<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
