Mentally, Amami\nfeels much further away than Hokkaido (circled in Red) where <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/category\/japan\/furano-biei\/\">we visited last\nMay<\/a>, even though the latter is indeed farther away.<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;om=1&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=28.27052,129.49173&amp;spn=0.604741,1.224976&amp;t=p&amp;z=10\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/Amami-Flight.gif\" width=\"510\" height=\"583\"\nid=\"iAmami_Flight\"\nindexhint=\"bottom\"\/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>When we went to Hokkaido, we took an <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2007-05-10\/448\">18-hour ferry trip<\/a>, but\nwere almost always within sight of land. <span class='nobr'>The flight<\/span> back from Amami was\njust an hour and fifteen minutes (about 575 miles), but it felt further\naway. Perhaps it's that great expanse of water in between.<\/p>\n\n<p>Arriving on the afternoon of December 30th set the tone for the entire\ntrip: landing at Amami airport, already over the runway and just inches\nfrom touching down, the pilot decided that it was too windy to risk <span class='nobr'>a\nlanding<\/span> and jammed the throttle to maximum power. Her mom's mom &ndash; her grandma &ndash; was born in Amami\nand lived there until her mid teens. <span class='nobr'>At that lunch<\/span> before we left, we spent\n<span class='nobr'>a pleasant<\/span> afternoon looking at maps and satellite photos, coaxing as much\nfrom Grandma's memory as 65 years of absence would allow. She's had slight\nAlzheimer's for the past few years, but the topic of Amami seemed to bring\nsomewhat of <span class='nobr'>a spark.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>Sadly, upon our return on the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> we found out that she\nsuffered <span class='nobr'>a stroke<\/span> while we were away, and that her prognosis isn't\nparticularly good.
