I noticed a tiny old house being demolished nearby the other day, and\nstopped in for a look.<\/span> It could<\/span> be anywhere from 40 to 100+ years old...\nthe guys tearing it down didn't know, but it was built at a time<\/span> when\nJapanese homes were still built with mud and bamboo for the walls.<\/p>\n\n

There are still plenty of this kind of construction in Kyoto. Often, the\noutside of such walls are veneered in wood, as seen in my\nRandomly Photographed Stroll in Kyoto<\/a>\nand Old Wood-Veneer Siding (Desktop Background)<\/a> posts.<\/p>\n\n

The shot above shows rough-hewn beams that were used for most of the\nmajor structural work, which were above the ceiling line before the demo\ncrew took the ceiling out. The bamboo<\/span> lattice is in the center of the wall,\nwith the dried mud that had been on the inside having been removed with the\nceiling.<\/p>\n\n

The internal walls were also mud and bamboo...<\/p>\n\n

The total land area of the property was very small – perhaps\nenough to park four cars on comfortably – yet even with such a lack<\/span>\nof space, a fair<\/span> portion was still dedicated to a small<\/span> garden. I think<\/span> that says an enormous amount about how important nature is in Japanese\nculture. In the garden<\/span> was this fairly large stone lantern, which stood\nabout to my waist...<\/p>\n\n

The pieces are not sitting square in the picture above because I took<\/span> it\nafter having moved them to gauge their weight. I got permission<\/span> from the\ndemo foreman to take the thing home, but when I came<\/span> back the next day to\nget it, I found<\/span> that the bottom piece – which I thought<\/span> would be just\nat the limit of what I could<\/span> move by myself – was actually extended\nwell into the ground, with less than half sticking out. It was way<\/span> too\nheavy for me to move, so sadly, I abandoned<\/span> it.<\/p>\n\n

The demo crew said that they'd probably just throw the thing away. It was quite<\/span> weathered, which made it all the more charming, as far as I was<\/span>\nconcerned. While I was<\/span> there, someone I took<\/span> to be a real<\/span>-estate agent\nstopped by, and chatted with the demo crew about the lantern's possible\nvalue. It seems<\/span> that if it was made in Korea, it was old and had no value,\nbut if it had been made in Japan, it was an antique and was worth a lot.<\/span> No one knew<\/span> which it was, but considering the low value of the house, one can\nguess it probably wasn't worth much.<\/p>\n\n

Still, I liked<\/span> it.<\/p>\n\n

I'm no expert on Japanese architectural anthropology, but it seemed\nclear that the house was built before electricity was available, as it\nseems to have been wired after the fact.<\/p>\n\n

The hole hacked in the concrete below to make way for a light<\/span> switch attests to something.<\/p>\n\n

It was very dark where I took the picture above. The photo<\/span> was taken\nwith a long<\/span> 1<\/sup>\/15th of a second<\/span> exposure, at f\/2.8, at ISO\n3200<\/i>. My D200 is<\/span> not a D300<\/a>, so an ISO 3200 shot\nlooks, well, like an ISO 3200 shot. What can I say.<\/span>.. it was dark, and I\ndidn't<\/span> have a tripod.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Driving by again the other day, the lot was cleared and level dirt, and\nwas incredibly<\/i>, shockingly small. I couldn't<\/span> imagine that someone\ncould build a house<\/span> on it, much less one with a fairly<\/span> sizable (relatively\nspeaking) garden, so there's something to be said for the skill of the\ndesigner to make a microscopic<\/span> three-room house feel merely “really really\nsmall”.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
