I've been meaning to write about and recommend the 16\" FotoSharp Camera Rain\nCover<\/a> I picked<\/span> up last summer. It's a remarkably<\/span> simple little cover\nthat scrunches up into a tiny<\/span> ball in my camera bag when not in use,\nyet provides rain protection even with my big Nikkor 70<\/span>-200 VR\nzoom<\/a> on my D200.<\/p>\n\n

The pictures on its web\nsite<\/a> pretty much show what it is, especially the 3rd one that shows it\nlaid out flat (on top of a book,<\/span> to show its transparency). It's a tube<\/span>\nwith a smallish<\/span> opening on one end that goes over the lens, and a big<\/span>\nopening on the other for you to get at the camera. The size I<\/span> got cost\nabout $30, which is perhaps a bit<\/span> pricy when you look at the materials, but\nless so when you look at the labor and the convenience of having it\ndelivered to your door ready to use.<\/p>\n\n

I decided that I needed something like this last spring, after my rainy day<\/a> trying to take\npictures at one of Kyoto's more picturesque temples<\/a>. I'm sure that<\/span> I presented<\/span> a comical<\/span> sight trying to balance a big<\/span> blue\numbrella over myself and my camera while trying to get a picture<\/span> of a fern<\/span>\nor something. After a while,<\/span> I started<\/span> to realize that the huge blue\numbrella (the same one seen in this post<\/a> of Anthony\ndancing) was casting a blue<\/span> light on my closeups. Ugh.<\/p>\n\n

So, I got one<\/span> of these FotoSharp rain covers (FotoSharp calls it a\n“RainCoat”) and I was<\/span> very pleased. Its great<\/span> combination of portability\nand effectiveness make it a no<\/span>-brainer to always have on hand in my camera\nbag.<\/p>\n\n

I've used it a few times, most recently when it started to sprinkle at\nthe shrine closing\nceremony<\/a> I posted<\/span> about last month. I've also used it as padding\nbetween items in my camera bag, to provide some measure of shade for the\ncamera\/lens on a hot<\/span> day, and as a flash<\/span> diffuser for impromptu close-up\nmacro work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ordering process is a bit unorthodox in this modern day: you tell\nthem what you want, they send it, if you like it, you send a check.<\/span> If not,\nyou send it back. It's got a<\/span> wonderful Mom & Pop feel to it that's rare\nthese days.<\/p>\n\n

I was so happy with the one I got that I immediately<\/span> ordered two more,\nto take back with me to Japan as gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n

They have other styles and sizes<\/a>, for all kinds of needs.<\/p>\n\n
