Anthony drew the picture above as a present<\/span> for one of the girls in his\nclass, Mizuki-chan. She came over<\/span> for a visit<\/span> on Friday and forgot one of\nher toys, so he's including the drawing along with the toy when he returns\nit to her tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n

He drew the picture below last week, at my request for a drawing<\/span> that we\ncould include on our Christmas \/ New Year's cards. I didn't<\/span> request any\nspecific content, but he naturally knew to draw a family<\/span> picture...<\/p>\n\n

<\/a>\nMommy, Anthony, (George), and Daddy<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n

It was nice that he even included Curious George<\/a>, a constant<\/span>\ncompanion he received as a present<\/span> from my coworkers at Yahoo! Finance just\nprior to his birth.<\/p>\n\n

Anthony has many strong points, but drawing has never been one of them. At five years<\/span>, two months old, many of his classmates have more developed\ndrawing skills, but as you'd expect from parents, we're plenty enamored\nwith what he produces just as it is.<\/p>\n\n

You can certainly see the progress over time, comparing these with\nsomething from when he was almost three years old<\/a>, and\na couple<\/span> of items from a year<\/span> ago: family drawings<\/a> and attention to biological\ndetail<\/a>. This week's drawings are even a big<\/span> jump from what he was doing\nthree months ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Another area where Anthony is perhaps a bit<\/span> behind his peers is in\nreading and writing. The reason, of course, is that he's got two languages\nto deal with (and his speaking and listening are quite bilingual<\/a>), so today\nwhen he wrote his name all by himself without any prompting or example to\ncopy from, there was much joy all around.<\/p>\n\n

This writing was in the fog on the mirror above the bathtub, while\nhaving a bath<\/span> with Mommy. When he got out of the bath, he wanted to write\nmore, so I got<\/span> paper and pen and he drew this:<\/p>\n\n

The top characters (\u3042\u3093\u3068) are his name in Japanese (“anto”). He then drew<\/span> a picture<\/span> of the family sleeping, and tried to write his name again\nbeside his head. He apparently<\/span> made a mistake<\/span> with the last letter, because\nhe then wrote that above, converting the mistake into a trash<\/span> can sitting\non the floor beside the sleeping Daddy (where there is really a trash<\/span>\ncan).<\/p>\n\n

His attempt to cover up the mistake reminds me of when I was<\/span> in third\ngrade and was drawing a Mother's<\/span> Day card, I must have<\/span> been daydreaming\nbecause I wrote<\/span> “FROM JEEF”. Realizing my mistake, I drew a<\/span> sun such that\none of the sunbeams covered the bottom of the second “E”, converting the\nphrase to the proper “FROM JEFF”. I did this<\/span> with sufficient skill that no\none would ever be able to notice, yet, quite oddly, from about that time my\nsiblings sometimes took to calling me “JEEF”, a mistake<\/span> that they still\noccasionally make to this day.
