Fumie and I made an overnight trip to the city of Takamatsu, in Kagawa\nPrefecture, on the large island of Shikoku, Japan, to see pop singer\nKousuke Atari (\u4e2d\u5b5d\u4ecb)<\/span> in concert. Just as I did<\/span> the last time we made an\novernight trip (which was also to see Kousuke Atari in\nconcert<\/a>, at a shrine<\/span> in Miyajima<\/a>), I awoke<\/span> early\nto see what photo opportunities there might be in the early of morning.<\/p>\n\n

Unlike Miyajima and our extended time there, which produced so many nice\n(or story-telling)\npictures that I had<\/span> to make a Miyajima\ncategory<\/a> on my blog, we were in Takamatsu for only a short<\/span> time, and,\nunfortunately, were able to enjoy almost nothing of the area. Our hotel<\/span> was\nright downtown at the port, which made for a very<\/span> industrial – but\nstill pretty – sunrise.<\/p>\n\n

The Ferris wheel at left is, apparently, the “only Ferris wheel in the\nworld on top of a book<\/span> store” (the book store, apparently, being the\nlargest in all of Japan). As Zak notes<\/a>, Japanese people\nseem to have a thing<\/span> for Ferris wheels. I've even had a Ferris<\/span> wheel on my\nblog before, on a Rice\nTerraces<\/a> post.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nOn the four-hour drive the previous\nevening, we stopped by a highway<\/span> rest area that had “the world's only\nhighway-rest-area Ferris wheel.” We actually rode it, enjoying the views of\nthe nearby Akashi Straights\nBridge<\/a> that we'd just crossed, the world's longest suspension bridge (a\nmile<\/span> and a quarter<\/span> between the two piers, almost two and a half<\/span> miles\ntotal). Alas, we didn't have time for the bookstore Ferris wheel this\ntrip.<\/p>\n\n

Just as with the Orange\nSunset in Kyoto<\/a> that I posted<\/span> the other day, I used the<\/span> zoom to try to\nisolate the color...<\/p>\n\n

Takamatsu is on the northern coast of Shikoku, an island a bit<\/span> smaller\nthan new Jersey. I got these<\/span> pictures with water to the east by walking out\nto the end of a breakwater<\/span> sticking half a mile<\/span> out into the ocean.<\/p>\n\n

Twenty minutes later it was as bright as daytime (because it was<\/i>\ndaytime ), but the shadows were still, of\ncourse, quite long. Back at the land-side of the breakwater, I had to<\/span> work\nto keep the shadow of this guy and his bicycle in frame....<\/p>\n\n
