One of the tallest buildings around here is the 38-story “Otsu Mary<\/a>” building in Otsu\nCity, Japan, over the small mountains to Kyoto's east. Zak<\/a> lives near there, so I've seen\nit from outside many times, but got a chance<\/span> to go inside today while\naccompanying him and his family to a small<\/span> dinner gathering.<\/p>\n\n

Here's a picture I happened to have taken earlier in the fall from the\naforementioned mountains that shows the six-year-old building...<\/p>\n\n

The dinner was on the 27th floor, so I thought<\/span> we'd be treated to some\nnice views, but the big surprise was to find out that it's hollow.<\/p>\n\n

The bottom of the hollow area is filled with water, with a gazebo<\/span> in the\nmiddle. The gazebo<\/span> would have been a perfect<\/span> place to take a straight<\/span>-up\npicture if it weren't for its roof being in the way. So, about the only\nplace to get a nice<\/span> shot looking up is to shimmy out the edge of the pool\nwith your back against the outside of an elevator shaft.<\/p>\n\n

There are 587 units in the building, and it wouldn't surprise me if the\ncleaning lady (in pink, just left of center in the shot above) feels that\nshe's dusting the same railing all day. At least<\/span> she doesn't have to do it\nalone; when I took<\/span> this shot, there was another lady in pink several floors\nabove her, just out of frame to the left.<\/p>\n\n

We visited the top, of course, and enjoyed the photographic\nopportunities. I'm fine with<\/span> heights so long as I'm not leaning directly\nover, so I was<\/span> just a tat<\/span> uneasy while taking the shot above.<\/p>\n\n

Looking down, you can see the gazebo roof in the middle, with the\nreflection from the water around it. The column<\/span> running halfway up the\ncenter is the elevator shaft mentioned earlier, which serves just the lower\n16 floors. (Other elevators serve other sets of floors, of course.)<\/p>\n\n

I see online that there's a grand unit for sale on the\n37th floor<\/a>. It's a regal<\/i> 1,730 square feet, and at today's\nexchange rate, runs about $675,000.<\/p>\n\n
