Today was one of those “I hate<\/span> where I\nlive<\/span><\/a>” days (in Kyoto, Japan) that I seem<\/span> to be having a lot<\/span>\nlately. A simple<\/span> visit with some friends to the “Fall-colors\nFestival” at the preschool of one of their friends turned into a\nveritable<\/span> feast of indulgent photographic delights.<\/p>\n\n

The fall colors have been creeping up for the last couple of weeks, as\nI've shown in a few<\/span> posts\n\n(here<\/a>, here<\/a>, here<\/a>, and here<\/a>),\n\nbut it's definitely not yet even near peak. Still, there are some wonderful\nspots of color, and many of them are at the Eikando Temple (where,\naccording to this post from\nlast year<\/a>, the colors were at a boiling<\/span> point during the first week of\nDecember; here is their calendar of viewing\nevents<\/a> in English).<\/p>\n\n

On the short walk to the Eikando Temple, we passed through the Nanzen\nTemple (scenes from which have appeared on my\nblog<\/a> numerous times), where I looked<\/span> up and took this shot....<\/p>\n\n

At the Eikando Temple, as everywhere, most trees hadn't yet begun to\nturn, or if they had, it was slight, as in the next shot....<\/p>\n\n

I tend to be drawn toward compositions that show opposites or\ndifferences, such as the mix of still-green and already-orange in the next\nshot....<\/p>\n\n\n

Along the same lines, this one shows not only the green and orange, but\na branch<\/span> that's already lost all its leaves. Combined with the sun hitting\nthe green leaves in the background, and the wonderfully light blue sky, it\nall adds up to a shot<\/span> that I really<\/span> like....<\/p>\n\n\n

With each branch on each tree advancing in color at its own pace, the\ncacophony of colors is delicious, as this pond-side shot hopefully\nshows. (Do you like how I was<\/span> able to mix sound, sight, and taste into a single<\/span> metaphor?\n)<\/p>\n\n\n

There was one tree on the temple grounds that was so amazingly fiery red\nthat it seemed to positively drip blood. It was orders of magnitude<\/i>\nmore deeply-rich than any other tree, so much so that I don't<\/span> think there's\na film<\/span> or camera sensor that can accurately record the wavelength.<\/p>\n\n

Human eyes could record the wavelength, and our brain could appreciate\nits rarity, and as such, there were a dozen<\/span> bozos with cameras huddling\nunder and around the tree. I laughed<\/span> at their pathetic inability to put the\ncamera away and just enjoy the moment, after which I elbowed<\/span> my way into the\nscrum and took this shot....<\/p>\n\n

It's nice that I wound up with these and 100+ other images that I really<\/span>\nlike, and perhaps a few<\/span> others might also appreciates them and the\nbackground-desktop versions I made,<\/span> but really, how on earth can a guy<\/span>\nget any work done under these conditions<\/b>?<\/p>\n\n

Please keep in mind that I'm not a professional<\/span> photographer.... I'm just a<\/span> guy with some okay equipment who went out for a walk<\/span> and snapped a\nfew<\/span> pictures today. I had<\/i> been thinking to spend the day writing my\nown Flickr export plugin\nfor Lightroom<\/a>, but oh well, so much for that. Maybe during winter, when\nKyoto is decidedly less glorious.<\/p>\n\n

(BTW, what do you think of the dark background?)<\/p>\n\n
