I had an unexpectedly interesting day, photography-wise. In the morning<\/span>\nthere was a rare<\/span> ceremony to close down a Shinto<\/span> shrine, and then I got<\/span>\nan invite to meet an old friend at Nijo Castle, a wonderful<\/span> World Heritage\nSite about two miles away that I've driven by a hundred<\/span> times, but until\ntoday had never visited.<\/p>\n\n

I'm sure that photos from both events will be filling my blog for a\nmonth,<\/span> but for the moment, a desktop<\/span> background from each....<\/p>\n\n

The shrine being closed down was a very<\/span> small one (about the size of a\nsingle<\/span> parking space) about 100 meters from my place. As part of<\/span> the\nceremony, they took a bunch<\/span> of sticks with people's names and ages written\non them, stacked them like Lincoln Logs, and set them ablaze. It was explained<\/span> to me that it was a wish<\/span> for good health, and I was<\/span> invited to\nadd a stick<\/span> of my own (which I gently<\/span> declined).<\/p>\n\n

Although Kyoto's Nijo Castle has cut-stone\nramparts and dual, concentric moats like the much larger Osaka Castle<\/a>, the\nbuildings are really more palatial than castle-like (the Nijo-Castle\nbuildings all one- or two-story buildings not built to withstand attack).<\/p>\n\n

Unlike Osaka Castle, most of the Nijo-Castle site is original, dating\nback 350-400 years (except for the Inner Palace, which dates back to 1847,\nhaving replaced the original which had been struck by lightning a hundred<\/span>\nyears earlier).<\/p>\n\n
