After yesterday's first\ntaste of autumn<\/a> while being stuck with nothing better than a\npoint<\/span>-n-shoot, I thought<\/span> I'd head back to the same area today with some\nbetter equipment. I brought<\/span> my Nikon D200<\/a>, Nikkor 70<\/span>-200\nf\/2.8 VR zoom<\/a>, a Nikon<\/span> TC-17EII 1.7× teleconverter (my first\nouting with it), and my monopod<\/a>. And Anthony.<\/p>\n\n

What I neglected to bring was enough time, light, or skill.<\/p>\n\n

I got there just before the last direct rays of light disappeared, and\nwithout the dynamic clouds of yesterday, there were no visual fireworks in\nthe sky, so the whole point of being there sort of vanished.<\/p>\n\n

The lack of light meant that I'd need longer shutter speeds to\nphotograph whatever remained, especially if I were<\/span> playing with the\nteleconverter, which turns a 200mm<\/span> f\/2.8 lens into a 340mm<\/span> f\/4.5 lens: I'd\nneed longer shutter times to handle the reduced light, and also to offset\nthe increased effect of vibration and shake that a longer<\/span> focal length\nresults in.<\/p>\n\n

So, I'd need to<\/span> be able to hold the camera very steady to get anything\nusable. I took a<\/span> lot of pictures, but the aforementioned lack of skill\nresulted in most being throw-away.<\/p>\n\n

The shot above is at 340mm, at only 1\/40th of a second,<\/span> and although\nit's not super sharp, even with the VR and the monopod, I'm still<\/span> proud of\nmyself. It ranks<\/span> up there with the “Thatched Wall, Edge On” shot from my Giouji Temple Part 2: Gate and\nWalls<\/a> post.<\/p>\n\n\n

One of the only shots I got before everything was engulfed in shadow was\nof these trees, which had somewhat taken on the appearance of being on\nfire, both due to the shape of their growth, and due to the redness from\nthe imminently-setting sun.<\/p>\n\n

They were in shadow moments later, but there was still sun higher up...<\/p>\n\n

Okay, that's really a chimney on the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, but\nit looked like a control<\/span> tower or ultra-modern lighthouse in this shot. I\ndidn't<\/span> see it that way at the time, though, having taken the shot merely\nbecause I liked<\/span> the colors and contrast on the hexagonal column.<\/p>\n\n

Having mentioned the Westin Miyako<\/a> in my previous\npost<\/a>, I thought<\/span> I'd show the closer view that a big<\/span> zoom (or a short<\/span>\nstroll) can provide. It's not that<\/span> interesting a building<\/span> or picture, but I\nlike<\/span> the warmth of the incandescent light filling the windows.<\/p>\n\n\n

It was quite dark when we headed back at 5:30pm, and on the way home we\npassed the area where we'd played with the remote-control car yesterday.\nThere, we found two kids on bikes, taking turns driving down the steps of\nthe back entrance to the museum. They both had flashing tri-color LEDs on\ntheir wheels, and one had a very<\/span> bright flashing LED headlight.<\/p>\n\n

I knew that it would make for an interesting long exposure (where “long”\nin this case means “about one second” – the shot about is 1.8\nseconds) which absolutely requires a tripod.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I didn't have a tripod, of course, which is why the picture above is all\nout of focus. However, since the focus of the picture is not, well, the\nfocus, it seems to work well enough to show the effect of the moving\nlights.<\/p>\n\n

When I got home and looked at the results, it took me quite a while<\/span>\nbefore I could<\/span> explain the decidedly odd paths of the wheel lights in this\nnext shot:<\/p>\n\n

Leaving the kids and their bikes, looking across the Kyoto Biwako canal\nto Nioumon St., I thought<\/span> the warm lights on this building looked\ninviting...<\/p>\n\n
