Anthony and I went out today to try the remote control car he got from\nGrandma and Grandpa for his\nbirthday<\/a> last week, our schedule or the weather conspiring to prevent\nus until today.<\/p>\n\n

We headed to the rear of the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art (in the same\narea as the “Hanami and Lunch” picture on this post<\/a>) and gave it\na try.<\/span> I happened<\/span> to have my point-n-shoot with me, so snapped a couple<\/span> of\npictures...<\/p>\n\n\n

I'd not charged the battery in the week after opening it, so about the\ntime he was getting used it, silly me, the battery wore down. Doh!<\/p>\n\n

Still, it was nice out, and the setting sun was lighting up the trees\nlike a torch,<\/span> so we stayed around a while<\/span> for him to play and me to take\nsome pictures (albeit with a dinky<\/span> point-n-shoot).<\/p>\n\n

It seems that Autumn starts later in Kyoto than the rest of the world,\nwhich is why a month<\/span> ago I used<\/span> some pictures from last year to put up a Kyoto<\/span> Fall Color Preview\n(Part I<\/a>\n·\nPart II<\/a>\n·\nPart III<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

People seem to enjoy the season: by far my most popular post these days\nis last year's “Color\nof Kyoto” desktop background<\/a>. On top of<\/span> that, the individual\npicture on that page is – according to my server logs – the\nbackground image on about 50 different people's social-networking site\n(MySpace, Friendster, etc.)<\/p>\n\n

Yet so far this year Kyoto has only the most early hints of what's to\ncome. Many trees have a touch<\/span> of change, but only a scattered<\/span> few have\nreally gotten colored in earnest. We happened<\/span> to be near a few<\/span> of those\njust as the final rays of a setting<\/span> sun were sandblasting them with\ncrimson, so they were absolutely livid with color.<\/p>\n\n

But unfortunately, as I said, I had only<\/span> my point-n-shoot. I tried,<\/span> but\nI couldn't<\/span> capture the scene.<\/p>\n\n

Considering how “un-fall” it is still in most of the city, I was surprised<\/span> that this particular tree was already surrounded by a thin<\/span> carpet\nof fallen leaves.<\/p>\n\n

The building you can sort of see in the center of the picture above is\nthe Westin Kyoto Miyako<\/a>, generally considered to be the best\nhotel in Kyoto, where heads of state used to stay until two years ago when\nthe Kyoto State Guest House was built. Anyway, the mountain (hill) to the\nright is behind it, with very easy walking paths up to nice vistas, from\nwhere I took<\/span> the Heian\nShrine from Afar<\/a> pictures, looking toward where Anthony and I were<\/span>\ntoday.<\/p>\n\n

Turning around to look in the same direction as that shot, but from much\ncloser, Anthony watches the big kids play baseball.<\/p>\n\n

The lighting in that shot seems a bit<\/span> odd because the baseball grounds\nwere still being bathed by the ultra-crimson last light of a setting<\/span> sun,\nwhile Anthony and I were<\/span> in the shadow of the museum.<\/p>\n\n

It was one of those late afternoons where the clouds were brilliantly\ncolored and captivatingly dynamic, and for half an hour they kept drawing\nmy gaze, seemingly to completely changing character from moment to moment\nso as to always be newly interesting.<\/p>\n\n

I tried to foster an appreciation for this beauty in Anthony, but he was\nmore interested in making a pile<\/span> of leaves.<\/p>\n\n

We eventually headed home, but headed up to the top (fifth) floor to\nfind that we just missed the sunset. He wasn't too interested in it anyway,\nso we went home. I swapped<\/span> my point-n-shoot for my real camera, only to\nreturn and find that the fireworks were over....<\/p>\n\n
