As I earlier posted from our trip to Miyajima<\/a>\nan island near Hiroshima, Japan, one of the main photographic attractions\nis the large main gate of the Itsukushima Shrine (\u53b3\u5cf6\u795e\u793e\u3001\u5bae\u5cf6). It's off the<\/span> coast in the\nintertidal zone, so when the tide is in, it's in the water and really\npretty. There's a nice<\/span> daytime shot of it at high tide at the end of this post<\/a>, and on\nanother post, some night\nshots<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Perhaps it's just the geek in me, but I think<\/span> there's a certain<\/span> interest\nto it even at low tide. I like to<\/span> see how things work, and how they're\nbuilt, and, of course, it's easier to get close to it when it's not\nsurrounded by eight feet of water.<\/p>\n\n

I got up early the morning after the Kousuke Atari concert<\/a>, and\nwas delighted to find that it was a very<\/span> low tide, with up to a quarter<\/span>\nmile of extra land exposed. It was occasionally<\/span> muddy, but mostly just damp\nsand and rocks, so I could<\/span> freely walk out and wander around. The guy walking<\/span> his dog in the shot above was likely just using the opportunity of\na low<\/span> tide to take a shortcut.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

There were large areas of light-green seaweed that looked like grass\nfrom a distance,<\/span> but up close, it looked more like small squares of slimy\npaper. It's quite<\/span> tasty.<\/p>\n\n

The intertidal zone also had a lot of large sandbanks, which are\nentirely under water at high tide, but at low tide create little lakes.<\/p>\n\n

The gate itself is quite large, although you don't get a sense<\/span> for\nreally how large until you get right up to it.<\/p>\n\n

This shrine (and the whole island, for that matter) are one of the most\nfamous tourist spots in Japan, but it was miraculously uncrowded the whole\ntime we were there, as if it was our own private resort. During my stroll\nthis morning, I saw less<\/span> than a dozen<\/span> others, including some guy at the\nedge of the water who, I presume,<\/span> was looking for clams.<\/p>\n\n

There was a steady stream of water still flowing outward, which I\nthought<\/span> at the time meant that the tide was still going out. Had I thought<\/span>\nabout it even a little,<\/span> I would<\/span> have realized that it wasn't the tide going\nout (the tide was already out), but an actual stream that likely originated\nin the mountains. It wasn't very deep or wide, but sufficiently both that\nit was difficult to cross wearing only street shoes.<\/p>\n\n

I like the clouds in this last picture. Despite the morning's overcast,\nthe clouds were thin so things were quite bright, making exposures a\nchallenge<\/span> (for me, at least).<\/p>\n\n
