One of the landmarks on Miyajima, Japan<\/a>,\nbesides the main gate of\nthe Itsukushima Shrine<\/a> (\u53b3\u5cf6\u795e\u793e\u3001\u5bae\u5cf6), is a five<\/span>-story tall pagoda called,\nunimaginatively enough, “five-storied Pagoda” (In Japanese: \u4e94\u91cd\u5854<\/span><\/b>,\ngojyuunodou<\/i>).<\/p>\n\n

There are a number of large pagodas on the island, but this particular\none is centrally located on relatively high ground, so it gets all the\nglory. You could<\/span> see it in the background of the “Side View” photo<\/a> on a\nrecent<\/span> post.<\/p>\n\n

We didn't actually pay it a visit, but passed by enough that I ended<\/span> up\nwith plenty of pictures with it. Here it's sort of peeking out from behind\nsome foreground trees in an area that had a quaint<\/span> feeling at night.<\/p>\n\n

There's something about the cute little car sticking out at right, with\nthe old fashioned mailbox next to it (the orange, cylindrical thing) that I\nfind<\/span> quite appealing.<\/p>\n\n

The little area lost much of its charm in the light of day, but was\nstill sufficiently enjoyable during a morning<\/span> stroll....<\/p>\n\n\n

Passing back through the area after hiking Mt. Misen<\/a> that\nafternoon, we ran into others who thought the old mailbox was quaint.<\/p>\n\n

This next shot is fairly uninteresting, except that it shows the two\nAussies in silly hats, one of which was thanked on the Mt. Misen\npost<\/a> for taking our picture.<\/p>\n\n

Most of the wires across the sky are to support sun shades that are\ndeployed on hot sunny days. A number<\/span> of streets in the area have them,\nwhich we appreciated earlier in the day when it was actually sunny and\nhot.<\/p>\n\n

The building center-left, by the way, is a restaurant<\/span> whose food is both\ntasty and quite reasonably priced.<\/p>\n\n\n

Here's a stylized picture of the pagoda that I created<\/span> by bumping up\nthe color saturation. Due to the<\/span> wide-angle lens and this view's framing,\nit's a bit<\/span> distorted, much like this picture of Anthony<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n
