On the little trip where I photographed the elderly couple harvesting\nrice<\/a>, I was returning<\/span> to the mountainous area with a lot<\/span> of terraced riced paddies<\/a>\nthat I'd visited the week prior with Nils (where the kids had played<\/a>). I'd returned<\/span> to try to get some shots from higher up on the mountain, where I envisioned<\/span>\nI'd be able look down at a wide<\/span> expanse of rice paddies splayed out before me.<\/p>\n\n

It turned out that the terrain wasn't that steep, so all but the few\nclosest terraces seemed to blend into one. There were dozens of levels\nbetween the road and the top, but I could<\/span> never really see them all at\nonce.<\/p>\n\n

Various fingers of farmed land extended up into the mountains,\naccompanied by tiny access roads, that was fun to explore.<\/p>\n\n

Here's an area fairly high up, away from civilization, that was suddenly very nicely manicured:<\/p>\n\n

There's a perfectly flat shelf of lush grass between the slope on the\nright and the hillside on the left, making it a perfect<\/span> place for a picnic<\/span>\nor barbecue.<\/p>\n\n

One of the little access roads continued well past any farming, and\nbecame very rocky and almost impassable. It probably<\/span> wasn't the best way to\ntreat my scooter, but I took<\/span> the road until it ended in the middle of\nnowhere, way up in the middle of the mountain (which turns out to have been\n681m tall Mt. Daibi — \u5927\u5c3e\u5c71).<\/span> By this time<\/span>, the area had become very\nsteep.<\/p>\n\n

With the high vantage point, I had a<\/span> nice view of the mile-long “Rainbow\nRoad” bridge across a particularly<\/span> narrow area of Lake Biwa.<\/p>\n\n

The main goal of my trip was to see the rice terraces, and indeed I saw<\/span>\nplenty. Most hadn't yet been harvested, but some had.<\/p>\n\n

That last shot, another one from the top of one set of terraces, is nice\nin that you can see the lake and the mountains way beyond. (You can even\nsee the ferris wheel, if you look closely enough).
