The other day I showed an elderly couple harvesting rice<\/a> from a\nsmall<\/span> field with a small<\/span> combine. Rice has been farmed a lot<\/span> longer than\ncombines and gasoline have been around, and it's still common to see rice\nharvested old-school style, especially small fields.<\/p>\n\n

While on yesterday's\ndrive<\/a> into the mountains northwest of Kyoto, we came upon such a\nharvest,<\/span> where the rice plant is cut and hung, rice kernels still\nattached....<\/p>\n\n

It's hard to see the actual rice kernels in the shot above, so below is\na full<\/span>-resolution crop from near the center...<\/p>\n\n

I'm not sure the exact process, but I'd guess that they're hung so that\nthe rice plant will wither, making it easier to separate the rice kernels\nsimply by shaking it. I don't<\/span> know.<\/p>\n\n

The next field (not visible, behind me in the shot above) was already\nharvested, but the one next to it hadn't been started yet, so it made for a\npretty<\/span> picture, It think...<\/p>\n\n\n
