{"id":561,"date":"2007-09-06T21:41:21","date_gmt":"2007-09-06T12:41:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2007-09-06\/561"},"modified":"2007-09-06T21:41:21","modified_gmt":"2007-09-06T12:41:21","slug":"amazing-rainbow-in-kyoto-tonight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2007-09-06\/561","title":{"rendered":"Amazing Rainbow in Kyoto Tonight"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<div class='ic'><a href=\"\/i\/Anthony-Rainbow-2007-09-06.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/Anthony-Rainbow-2007-09-06_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"502\"\nalt=\"Anthony, Mommy, and Daddy\"\nid=\"iAnthony_Rainbow_2007_09_06\"\nphotostream=\"anthony\"\ntitle=\"Drawing of three people under a rainbow, by 4-year-old Anthony\"\/><\/a>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Anthony, Mommy, and Daddy<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Half an hour after the sun went behind the mountains, and 10 minutes\n<i>after<\/i> the official sunset when it was already fairly dark, <span class='nobr'>I saw the<\/span>\nmost amazing, deeply rich maroon\/crimson\/pink <b>rainbow<\/b> you could\nimagine.<\/p>\n\n<p>At first I caught only the glimpse of one edge of it... it was\n<i>brilliant<\/i>, all the more so because of the aforementioned darkness,\nand perhaps also because the sunlight creating it must have been the\ndeepest of the reds of sunset (seeing how the sun had set 10 minutes prior,\nit was made with the last rays still hitting misting rain from the upper\nclouds). <span class='nobr'>It was during<\/span> that golden moment you might see <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> times <span class='nobr'>a year<\/span>\nwhen every wisp of cloud is brilliantly pink to begin with, set against <span class='nobr'>a\nsubdued<\/span> darkening sky.<\/p>\n\n<p>Anyway, suffice to say that I'd never seen anything like it, and it\ninspired awe. <span class='nobr'>And that was<\/span> just one edge of it. <span class='nobr'>To see more<\/span>, we had to go\nout onto the balcony.<\/p>\n\n<p>I rushed Anthony out onto the balcony, then rushed myself into my room\nto grab my camera. And my <a href=\"\/blog\/2007-08-24\/554\"\nclass='quiet'>monopod<\/a>, which took an agonizing 30 seconds to find. Oh,\ndrat, the camera doesn't have <span class='nobr'>a memory<\/span> card, so <span class='nobr'>I quickly<\/span> put one in. Geez,\nyou know, it's really too dark for the monopod, <span class='nobr'>I may as<\/span> well just use my\nnew <a href=\"\/blog\/2007-08-17\/547\"\nclass='quiet'>tripod<\/a>, but the <b>@*#&!($&amp;)%!<\/b> protective cover\nwon't come off in the split second <span class='nobr'>I want<\/span> it to, and <span class='nobr'>I have<\/span> to wrestle with\nit for five seconds. Finally, I <b>rush<\/b> out onto the balcony to see the\nfinal glimmers of the rainbow and rich clouds fading away to <span class='nobr'>a bleak<\/span>\nnothingness. Sigh.<\/p>\n\n<p>(UPDATE: I missed it, but <a href=\"\/blog\/2007-09-07\/562\"><span class='nobr'>a friend<\/span> did not<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n<p>I was depressed both about missing it, and about not getting <span class='nobr'>a picture<\/span>\nof it. Anthony sensed this, and said that he'd draw <span class='nobr'>a picture<\/span> of it for me\nthat would make me happy and that <span class='nobr'>I could<\/span> &#8220;keep with me until <span class='nobr'>I die,<\/span>&#8221; which\nis what's featured above. <span class='nobr'>He took some<\/span> poetic license in that he's missing\nthe reds and pinks that were predominate, it was dark but there weren't yet\nstars, and Mommy wasn't there. (Mommy was at an appointment at the time,\nand the taxi driver on the way home told her about it, and about how\neveryone was taking pictures of it.
