{"id":552,"date":"2007-08-23T19:24:07","date_gmt":"2007-08-23T10:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2007-08-23\/552"},"modified":"2007-08-23T19:24:07","modified_gmt":"2007-08-23T10:24:07","slug":"nikon-d300-d3-announcements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2007-08-23\/552","title":{"rendered":"Nikon D300 \/ D3 Announcements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>Two years after introducing the D200, Nikon today announced its\nsuccessor, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpreview.com\/previews\/nikond300\/\">Nikon\nD300<\/a>, and also the latest in its pro line, the full-frame $5,000 <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.dpreview.com\/previews\/nikond3\/\">Nikon D3<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>As I expected of any Nikon new-body announcement, this is really <span class='nobr'>a\nno<\/span>-win situation for me. Either the new camera is good enough that I'm left\nfeeling relatively disappointed in my <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-01-10\/130\" class='quiet'>Nikon D200<\/a>,\nor the new camera is pedestrian enough that I'm left disappointed in\nNikon.<\/p>\n\n<p>After reading the above-linked previews on Digital Photography Review,\nthe drool on my keyboard is telling me the result. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n<p>In the &#8220;D200 vs. D300&#8221; specification comparison presented about\nhalf-way down <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpreview.com\/previews\/nikond300\/\"\nclass='quiet'>the preview<\/a>, items for which one camera has <span class='nobr'>a clear<\/span>\nadvantage over the other are shown in green. <b>The D300's column is\ncompletely green<\/b>, except for camera weight and size, which are\nessentially unchanged from the D200.<\/p>\n\n<p>For the D300, particularly appealing to me are:<\/p>\n<ul style='margin-top:5px'>\n<li>Better low-light performance<\/li>\n<li><i>Much<\/i> higher resolution LCD monitor (44% larger, but 4&times; the pixels)<\/li>\n<li>Self-cleaning sensor<\/li>\n<li>LCD Live-view (a'la consumer point-n-shoots)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>I probably won't get one because <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> <i>need<\/i> one, but if <span class='nobr'>I\nreally<\/span> care about quality, <span class='nobr'>I really<\/span> should upgrade to the\nhigher-performance sensor, shouldn't I? \ud83d\ude42 &nbsp;&nbsp;<a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.naturfotograf.com\/index2.html\">Bj\u00f8rn R\u00f8rslett<\/a>, <span class='nobr'>a noted<\/span>\nnature photographer, says &#8220;<a\nhref=\"http:\/\/forums.dpreview.com\/forums\/read.asp?forum=1021&amp;message=24492014\"\nclass='quiet'>The new D3 has high-ISO performance beyond what anyone could\nimagine possible. <span class='nobr'>I could<\/span> hardly believe my eyes.<\/a>&#8221; <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> know\nhow much of that is found in the D300, but I'll be keeping my eyes out.\n\n<\/p>\n\n<p>When the D200 came out, it was in short supply for months, causing all\nkinds of angst in the Nikon community. <span class='nobr'>It looks<\/span> like Nikon will try to\navoid that this time: the Japanese press releases indicate that\nthey'll have an initial production of\n\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nikon.co.jp\/main\/jpn\/whatsnew\/2007\/0823_d300_02.htm\">60,000 units\/month for the D300<\/a>\ncompared with\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nikon.co.jp\/main\/jpn\/whatsnew\/2005\/1101_d200_01.htm\">40,000 units\/month for the D200<\/a> back in late 2005.\n\n(For comparison, the D3 is scheduled for  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nikon.co.jp\/main\/jpn\/whatsnew\/2007\/0823_d3_01.htm\">8,000\/month<\/a>.)\n<\/p>\n\n<p>About a year after the D200 came out, the public speculation for the\nnext Nikon camera really geared up, and it's been extremely intense for the\nlast six months or so. Really intense &mdash; lots of speculation. Today's\nannouncements will quell that for <span class='nobr'>a short<\/span> while, replacing it with\nspeculation on how what's been announced will actually perform.<\/p>\n\n<p>But I'll start the speculation on the next announcement: perhaps 18\nmonths from now, Nikon will announce <span class='nobr'>a full<\/span>-frame D400.
