I've still got to pay the bills while traveling, so spent the day on\nsome programming projects. We had a<\/span> nice storm blow through, so I sat<\/span> on\nthe veranda with my laptop, enjoying the rain, wind, thunder, and\nlightning while I worked.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

When you sit on the veranda of my folks' place, the birds generally\naccost you for waxworms<\/a> and peanuts,\nwhich we keep on hand for them. There were more birds than normal, perhaps\ndue to a lack<\/span> of flying insects during the heavy rain; at times, there were\neight or nine at once. Some of the chickadees come and land right on you. It was quite<\/span> pleasant.<\/p>\n\n

Some of the birds were so wet and scruffy-looking that I eventually<\/span> got\nmy camera and left it beside me, occasionally trying to get a shot.<\/span> By this time<\/span> the storm had passed and much of the scruffiness was gone, and\nanyway, I had a<\/span> difficult time getting a good<\/span> shot because it was fairly\ndark, and the birds were often closer than the minimum focus distance for\nthe 70-200\/2.8<\/a> zoom I\nwas<\/span> using. Combine that with how fast they move around, and it added up to\nrequiring more skill than I had<\/span> to focus properly. Still, it was good\npractice.<\/p>\n\n

At one point while I was working, a chickadee<\/span> landed on the top edge of\nmy MacBook's<\/a> screen,\nand sat there for a few<\/span> minutes checking out the computer and my typing\nhands. I continued<\/span> to type normally (I was<\/span> IM'ing to my brother Steve<\/a>) and the bird didn't\nseem to mind my flying fingers, but I didn't<\/span> dare reach for the camera.\nAfter a while,<\/span> he flew off.<\/p>\n\n

Anthony likes to feed the birds with Grandma, and it's on my list to try\nto get some nice shots of him doing so.<\/p>\n\n
