As I mentioned<\/a> in my\nprevious post, Anthony and I just<\/span> arrived at my folks' place in Ohio for\nthe summer. Besides just visiting family, it's good for his English. Fumie\nhas things to attend to in Kyoto during the summer, but felt it's important\nenough for his English that she'll part with us for a month.<\/span> One thing<\/span> that\nmakes it easier is that it's essentially free for us to call between Japan\nand America, thanks to the most excellent magic of our Vonage<\/a> American phone number in Kyoto. <\/p>\n\n

Anthony was very well behaved on the flights (Kansai to Cleveland, with\na change<\/span> of planes in San Francisco), which made things much easier on me. The flight<\/span> to San Francisco was a zippy<\/span> nine and a half<\/span> hours, of which\nAnthony slept perhaps three hours, and I slept<\/span> not at all.<\/p>\n\n

One thing that made the flight much better was that we got bumped up to\nUnited Airline's Economy\nPlus<\/a>, which I hadn't<\/span> known about but quickly learned to appreciate. My knees<\/span> are normally so cramped that I have<\/span> to take out the in-flight\nmagazine and other stuff from the pocket on the back of the seat in front\nof me just to get an extra measure of uncramp. On this flight<\/span>, though, I had plenty<\/span> of space... it was positively dreamy.<\/p>\n\n

90% of the economy section (which was 100% full) was comprised of two\ngroups of high schoolers, one group of Americans and another of Japanese. I had braced<\/span> myself for the worst, but both groups were very, very well\nbehaved.<\/p>\n\n

All in all, it was as good as a 9.5 hour flight without sleep can be.<\/p>\n\n

I became a walking zombie by the time the flight for Cleveland left San\nFrancisco, but Anthony was wide awake and in good spirits. That kid just\ndoes not need sleep.<\/p>\n\n

My folks picked us up, and Anthony remained in good spirits until we\nnoticed he was asleep during the ride home. I was in<\/span> bed by 10pm, and\nsurprisingly, we both slept pretty well. Jet lag is<\/span> normally\ncrushing<\/b> for me when I travel<\/span> this direction (such as when we came here last year<\/a> when\nit was the worst I can<\/span> remember), but this time it's not been downright\n“not bad.” I get<\/span> tired in the afternoon, but fix that with a short<\/span> nap.<\/p>\n\n
