Daimonji hike<\/a>, after\nhaving <a href=\"\/blog\/2007-07-03\/509\">lunch at the top of\nthe mountain<\/a>, we headed down <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> to the Daimonji <i>hidoko<\/i>, the\nDaimonji fire pits.<\/p>\n\n<p>The word &#8220;Daimonji&#8221; &mdash; <span class='nobr'>\u5927\u6587\u5b57<\/span> &mdash; literally means\n&#8220;big character,&#8221; both in the lower-case opposite sense of\n&#8220;upper-case,&#8221; and in the sense of &#8220;the Chinese character\nthat conveys the meaning 'big'.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;Daimonji&#8221; is also the name of the mountain in Eastern Kyoto that has <span class='nobr'>a\nbig<\/span> 150-meter-wide <i>daimonji<\/i>, <big>\u5927<\/big>, on it.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;Daimonji&#8221; is also the name of the festival held every year\nin August, in which this and other symbols on mountains around Kyoto <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2012-08-16\/2074\">light\nup in fire<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The area where the fires are lit is called the <i>hidoko<\/i> <span class='nobr'>(\u706b\u5e8a<\/span>\n&mdash; fire pits), and was our destination after leaving the peak of the\nmountain. <span class='nobr'>The pictures<\/span> above and below show it from town, from about 2.6km\n(1.6mi) away.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class='ic'><a name='023212' href=\"\/i\/JEF_023212.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JEF_023212_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"462\"\nalt=\"Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2006 Jeffrey Eric Francis Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i023212\"\ntitle=\"View of the Mt.
