Continuing with the ongoing set of posts on last fall's Mt. Daimonji hike<\/a>, after\nhaving lunch at the top of\nthe mountain<\/a>, we headed down a bit<\/span> to the Daimonji hidoko<\/i>, the\nDaimonji fire pits.<\/p>\n\n

The word “Daimonji” — \u5927\u6587\u5b57<\/span> — literally means\n“big character,” both in the lower-case opposite sense of\n“upper-case,” and in the sense of “the Chinese character\nthat conveys the meaning 'big'.”<\/p>\n\n

“Daimonji” is also the name of the mountain in Eastern Kyoto that has a\nbig<\/span> 150-meter-wide daimonji<\/i>, \u5927<\/big>, on it.<\/p>\n\n

“Daimonji” is also the name of the festival held every year\nin August, in which this and other symbols on mountains around Kyoto light\nup in fire<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The area where the fires are lit is called the hidoko<\/i> (\u706b\u5e8a<\/span>\n— fire pits), and was our destination after leaving the peak of the\nmountain. The pictures<\/span> above and below show it from town, from about 2.6km\n(1.6mi) away.<\/p>\n\n\n

In the view from space above (courtesy of Google Maps), the green arrow\nat the top shows the location from where the photo below was taken, at the\npoint in the trail down from the top of the mountain that you exit the deep\nwoods and the view of the city opens up before you.<\/p>\n\n

It feels much<\/i> closer to the city than the view from the summit<\/a>,\nbeing 700 meters closer and 100m lower than the summit. The ground<\/span> just\ndrops away from the entrance point, so as you approach it, you see only the\ncity beyond but nothing up close, so you wonder what happened to everyone\nwho used to be in front of you. It's really<\/span> an amazing feeling to\nexperience the first time.<\/p>\n\n

It's very steep, especially right at the top.<\/p>\n\n

It's probably not particularly steep when compared with some other\npoints along the trail, but it feels so steep because it's a direct,<\/span>\nstraight route, with no tree cover and a wide<\/span> sweeping view, and only a\nnarrow<\/span> set little steps prevents you from rolling all the way down to the\nimperial palace.<\/p>\n\n
