Australian\/Japanese friends of mine, Peter and Tomoko, had their third\nchild baptized at mass today. Mariko Theresa was 12 days old at the time,\nalthough she has aged an additional 4% in the half day since. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

Their oldest, Joseph, is just three months older than Anthony, so they\nenjoy playing together. We normally<\/span> have lunch together after mass, and\noften go to a playground<\/span> together after that. Their second child is\ntwo-year-old Kyoko.<\/p>\n\n

12-day-old Mariko was, of course, just cute enough to eat (although\nshe's so tiny you'd need to go back for seconds). She slept<\/span> the whole time,\nwaking up only for a few<\/span> seconds to yawn at one point after mass.<\/p>\n\n

As anyone with kids can tell you, babies don't really develop facial\nexpressions until three or four months old, at least not ones unrelated to\nbodily functions (hunger, pooping, distress, etc.). A first<\/span> smile – at\nperhaps four or five months – is definitely a red<\/span>-letter day.<\/p>\n\n

So it was with considerable amazement that I saw<\/span> 12-day-old Mariko break\nout into a smile<\/span> just after receiving a soft<\/span> touch from her grandma. She had the<\/span> look you see in the picture above for the whole time before and\nafter, but for a moment<\/span> after Grandma's pat on the head, she had the smile\nyou see below.<\/p>\n\n
