Peter requested<\/a>\nsome fern pictures. I happen<\/span> to have a few<\/span> poorly-photographed fern\npictures in my library, so here they are....<\/p>\n\n

The next three fuzzy shots were taken in the dark shade under deep\nforest cover, handheld, while on a short hike in the hills<\/a>\nwith Anthony last May. I've got a monopod on order<\/a> now, which hopefully\nshould make this kind of situation easier to photograph, but in any case,\nhere are the shots I did<\/span> get:<\/p>\n\n

The next picture is sad. I took it<\/span> when we stopped in the mountains in\nthe middle of nowhere to eat our picnic lunch, on the drive that later\nyielded these wonderful\npurple irises<\/a>. We'd pulled<\/span> off the road onto a little<\/span> clearing\noverlooking a gully<\/span> perhaps 15 feet below, into which someone had dumped a\nTV<\/span> (visible in the center of the shot, far behind the plants in the foreground).<\/p>\n\n

It's something I've never understood, but it seems that a sufficiently<\/span>\nlarge fraction of Japanese feel it's a worthwhile<\/span> endeavor to haul garbage\nlong distances to beautiful nature spots so that they can dump it there.\nI've traveled around much of the country by car and motorcycle, and no\nmatter how deep you get into the mountains, hours from any “civilization,”\nyou always have a wide<\/span> selection of rusted out refrigerators, TVs, and\nwashers lining the bottoms of gullies and ravines. Certainly, every country\nhas its own things to be ashamed of, but this is one of Japan's.<\/p>\n\n

It reminds me a lot of the public service ads I saw<\/span> as a kid<\/span> in the US, showing\nan American Indian shedding a tear<\/span> at the garbage people left around. The poor guy<\/span> would cry a river<\/span> if he came to Japan. I just can<\/span>'t comprehend what would drive someone to do this kind of stuff.<\/p>\n\n
