\n\nIt's been a year since I bought an Apple MacBook<\/a> to replace\nmy older Apple iBook. It has a<\/span> trackpad that you can move a finger<\/span> around\nto control a mouse,<\/span> but I found<\/span> out by accident this morning that by\ndragging two fingers on it, you can scroll.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nIt's amazing. You can scroll<\/span> quickly with a flick<\/span> of your fingers (or a\nflick<\/span> of one finger while another rests elsewhere on the pad), or slowly\nmove the page around as if you were shoving a paper<\/span> around on a desk.<\/span> The\nup\/down scroll is really useful for web pages, but all four directions are\nnice when looking at a large<\/span> image on the small laptop screen.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nClearly, this OSX feature is the forerunner of the ultra-cool interface<\/a> seen\nin the iPhone adds (or in person, if you have one — something not an\noption yet for me in Kyoto).\n\n<\/p>

\n\nI'm not sure what's more amazing, this feature or that I've had the laptop\nfor a year<\/span> before noticing it. I've known about it for only a few<\/span> hours\nnow, but its use is already second nature.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nA related feature I discovered about a month<\/span> ago is that if you move two\nfingers up on the trackpad while holding down the control key, it zooms the\nentire screen. Sometimes I would<\/span> do this by accident while using the\ncontrol key while typing quickly, somehow bumping the trackpad with my\nthumbs enough for the zoom feature to click in, but only a little.<\/span> It would<\/span> quickly auto-snap back to normal, so the effect to an unknowing me was\nexactly<\/i> that which I'd expect to see with an LCD starting to fritz\nout. I was<\/span> this<\/i> close to calling Apple Support when I finally<\/span>\nnoticed what was going on, and realized you could use the feature to zoom\nway up (20×).\n\n<\/p>
