{"id":502,"date":"2007-06-27T08:03:08","date_gmt":"2007-06-26T23:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2007-06-27\/502"},"modified":"2007-06-30T19:36:10","modified_gmt":"2007-06-30T10:36:10","slug":"lightroom-11-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2007-06-27\/502","title":{"rendered":"Lightroom 1.1 Released"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<div class='ic'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/lr11\/LR11_masthead.jpg\" width=\"732\" height=\"323\"\nalt='Adboe\nLightroom 1.1 masthead with the \"1.1\" emphasized for, er,\nemphasis.'\nclass=\"old_floating_img\"\nid=\"imasthead\"\nindexhint=\"left\"\ntitle='Adboe\nLightroom 1.1 masthead with the \"1.1\" emphasized for, er,\nemphasis.'\/><br\/><span style='font-size:160%'>Adobe Lightroom <span class='nobr'>Version\n1.1<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n\n<p>\n\nAdobe has <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshoplightroom\/\">officially\nannounced<\/a> the highly anticipated &#8220;<span class='nobr'>Version 1.1<\/span>&#8221; upgrade to their <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/photo-tech\/lightroom\/\">Lightroom<\/a>\nphoto-workflow application, four months after <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2007-01-29\/377\"><span class='nobr'>Version 1.0<\/span> was released<\/a>.\nLightroom creates <span class='nobr'>a whole<\/span> new world of organization and expression for\nphotographers, one that fulfills many needs the user might not have even\nrealized where there. <\/p><p>\n\nYet, once the user settles in, they find themselves invigorated into <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2007-02-19\/385\">wanting even more<\/a>\norganizational and creative functionality, and this free upgrade is <span class='nobr'>a step<\/span>\nin that direction.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThere are many new features in 1.1, some of which have <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.scottkelby.com\/blog\/2007\/archives\/211\">been previewed<\/a>\nalready (including the <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/photoshopnews.com\/2007\/05\/31\/about-camera-raw-41\/\">new\nsharpening controls<\/a> released in Adobe Camera Raw 4.1.).\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI'm sure there will be many &#8220;What's new in 1.1&#8221; lists out there\n(here's <span class='nobr'>a rather<\/span> comprehensive-looking <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.photoshopservices.co.uk\/lightroom11whatsnew.htm\">list from\nVictoria Bampton<\/a>), so I'll just list some of the things that <span class='nobr'>I\nparticularly<\/span> appreciate. <span class='nobr'>I use primarily<\/span> the Library and Develop modules,\nonly rarely touching the Slideshow, Web, and Print modules, so nothing from\nthose three are listed here. Also, <span class='nobr'>I haven't<\/span> even paid much attention to\nperhaps the biggest addition &mdash; the concept of &#8220;Catalogs&#8221;\n(replacing 1.0's idea of &#8220;Library&#8221;) and the ability to move\nthem among machines &mdash; so that's not here either.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\n(And I should admit that because I've been using the 1.1 upgrade in some\nform or another for some months, <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> necessarily remember what was in\n1.0, so may list some thing here that aren't actually new.)\n\n<\/p>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/lr11\/SynchroMenu.gif\" width=\"359\" height=\"215\"\nclass=\"old_floating_img\"\nid=\"iSynchroMenu\"\nnoindex=\"noindex\"\nstyle=\"float:right; margin-top:10px\"\/>\n\n<p style='font-weight:bold; font-size:130%'>My Favorite New Features in <span style='white-space:nowrap'><span class='nobr'>Lightroom 1.1<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class='h502'>Synchronizing Folders<\/p>\n\n<p>You can now &#8220;synchronize&#8221; <span class='nobr'>a folder,<\/span> comparing its contents against the\ncurrent catalog, checking for newly-added or missing images.<\/p>\n\n<p>It's a small thing, but very convenient for some workflows. Prior to\nthis, <span class='nobr'>I used a<\/span> little script <span class='nobr'>I wrote<\/span> myself that attempted to report files\non disk that weren't in Lightroom. (<span class='nobr'>I sort<\/span> of think it should be called &#8220;Set Total Exposure,&#8221;\nbut Adobe neglected to ask my opinion on the subject.)<\/p>\n\n<p>This is convenient when you have many images of the same scene, taken\nwith different shutter speeds, apertures, etc. (such as when trying\ndifferent creative combinations, or when the camera's light meter\nregistered something slightly differently from shot to shot). When you find\none with an exposure you like, you can sync that to all the others. <span class='nobr'>Now that each<\/span> shot has the same exposure, you can more objectively judge them\non their content.<\/p>\n\n<p>(This feature owes its existence at least partially to persistent\npestering by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imageevent.com\/sipphoto\">Lee Jay\nFingersh<\/a>, who finds it particularly useful for processing airshow\nphotos.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class='h502'>Mouseover Images<\/p>\n\n<p>Here's one that probably doesn't seem particularly interesting at first, but it really grows --><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>When the mouse goes over a name on the left side of the Library panel (<span class='nobr'>a\nfolder<\/span> name, collection name, keyword, etc...), an image from that\nfolder\/collection\/keyword\/etc. is shown in the little upper-right navigator\nwindow.<\/p>\n\n<p>I've simulated it for you at left, so give it <span class='nobr'>a try<\/span> by mousing over the folder names.<\/p>\n\n<p>As far as I know, there's not currently <span class='nobr'>a way<\/span> to select which image is\nshown for any particular name. <span class='nobr'>As best as<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I can<\/span> tell, the one with the\noldest capture date is shown, except for the somewhat unlikely case of <span class='nobr'>a\nfolder<\/span> whose sort has been set to revers chronological, in which case the\nnewest image is shown. <span class='nobr'>Any other<\/span> sort (user sort, sort by filename, etc.)\nhas the image selection revert to oldest capture time.<\/p>\n\n<p>Still, it's a very nice little touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class='h502'>Negative Color Filters<\/p>\n\n<p>You can now set the filters to <span style='white-space:nowrap'>&#8220;all\nexcept images tagged with purple&#8221;<\/span> or the like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class='h502'>ESC Aborts <span class='nobr'>a Crop<\/span>\/Rotate Operation<\/p>\n\n<p>It used to be that hitting the ESC key while doing <span class='nobr'>a crop<\/span>\/rotate caused\nthe current crop and rotation to be committed. <span class='nobr'>It now aborts<\/span> the operation,\nreturning the image to how it was before the crop\/rotate tool was invoked.\nThis is as God intended.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class='h502'>New Preferences<\/p>\n\n<p>There are a number of new preferences. <span class='nobr'>I'm not sure<\/span> whether it first\nappeared in 1.1, but I've only recently noticed it, so I'll mention the\nability to set the filename-creation template for those files created by a\n&#8220;Edit in Photoshop&#8221; operation. <span class='nobr'>I never<\/span> cared for the &#8220;-Edit&#8221; suffix, so\nhave changed that.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class='h502'>Metadata-Panel Improvements<\/p>\n\n<p>The Metadata panel in Library mode has received <span class='nobr'>a number<\/span> of\nenhancements. <span class='nobr'>It includes<\/span> new built-in presets that offer large boxes for\nthe caption, and also <span class='nobr'>a number<\/span> of new metadata items.\n\n<\/p><p style='clear:both'>\n\nThere are several new date-related items that may be of interest to those\nwho scan <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of images, and also these new items:<\/p>\n\n<ul style='margin-top:8px'>\n<li><b>Original Filename<\/b> &mdash; image's filename at the itme of import<\/li>\n<li><b>File Type<\/b> &mdash; &#8220;Jpeg&#8221;, &#8220;Dng&#8221;, &#8220;Raw&#8221;, ...<\/li>\n<li><b>Copy Name<\/b> &mdash; useful for virtual copies of <span class='nobr'>a master<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Metadata Status<\/b> &mdash; indicates whether metadata differs between library and disk<\/li>\n<li><b>Metadata Date<\/b> &mdash; when metadata was last written to disk.<\/li>\n<li><b>Sidecar Files<\/b> &mdash; types of sidecar files, e.g. &#8220;.xmp&#8221;, &#8220;.jpg&#8221;, ...<\/li>\n<li><b>Audio File<\/b> &mdash; audio annotation file (but haven't gotten it to work yet)<\/li>\n<li><b>File Size<\/b> &mdash; size on disk (e.g. in megabytes)<\/li>\n<li><b>Copyright Status<\/b> &mdash; &#8220;Copyrighted&#8221;, &#8220;Public Domain&#8221;, href=\"\/blog\/2007-06-27\/503\">Lightroom Metadata-Viewer Preset Builder application<\/a> (now updated for 1.1),\nallowing you to create custom viewer presets in which you have <span class='nobr'>a fair<\/span>\namount of control over the layout. <span class='nobr'>You can make<\/span> input text boxes wide\nand\/or tall, you can change or remove labels, mark some items as read-only\n(sort of), and more. Very sweet.\n\n<\/p>\n\n<p class='h502'>Clarity<\/p>\n\n<p>The new Develop &#8220;Clarity&#8221; control (grouped with Vibrance and Saturation)\nincreases local contrast throught the picture.
