So, yesterday's post<\/a>\nleft off with a photo<\/span> from the stairs looking at the dining platforms over\nthe upper river. The stairs<\/span> were those going down to the lower “noodle\nplatforms” (where the noodle part of the lunch is to be eaten), and so\nhere's a view<\/span> from the same position, looking down at them.<\/p>\n\n

That trough-like thing is really a flume<\/span> in which water — and\noccasionally soumen\nnoodles<\/a> — flow. You sit in<\/span> front of the flume, watching for\nnoodles that you pluck out and eat. The flume<\/span> is really supposed to be made\nof bamboo trunks cut in half, but in this respect the restaurant opted for\nsomething easier (and perhaps more sanitary).<\/p>\n\n

I've got to apologize for the lack of photographic quality with these\nshots. I was leaning<\/span> way over the edge trying to get the picture, yet at\nthe same time I was<\/span> the final line of defense for escaping noodles. Once\nthey passed me, they went down a drain<\/span> to Lord knows where, but as the\nwaitress said, “they won't come back.” So, I had to<\/span> remain on my toes to\nquickly replace the camera with my chopsticks and perform an emergency\nnoodle rescue operation from time to time.<\/p>\n\n\n

After a while, three bunches of pink, plum-flavored noodles came, indicating that our meal was complete.<\/p>\n\n

I don't know what it is about plucking noodles from a stream,<\/span> but it\nseems to cause the tongue to become firmly planted between clenched\nlips.... at least in those pictured in this post. \ud83d\ude42 <\/p>\n\n

It also seems to cause an infectious outbreak of fun and smiles.<\/p>\n\n

For reference, this is called nagashi soumen<\/i> — \u6d41\u3057\u305d\u3046\u3081\u3093 — “flowing noodles.”<\/p>\n\n\n
