As I mentioned in my previous post, I made<\/span> a rain<\/span>-drenched visit<\/a> to\nthe Hougon'in Temple (\u5b9d\u53b3\u9662)<\/span> in the Arashiyama area of Kyoto yesterday. Like the nearby Giouji Temple<\/a> (\u7947\u738b\u5bfa)<\/span> that I recently<\/span>\ndiscovered, there's lots of moss<\/a> and architecture elements made\nwith only natural materials.<\/p>\n\n

In that last category, Hougon'in seems to have the edge, because it has\nsuch a wide<\/span> variety of things (fences, gates, barriers, path markers, ...)\nand all seem to be made from bamboo and twine... no nails, wire, screws, or\nthe like.<\/p>\n\n

On the other hand, it's also much more “busy” a site,<\/span> with the garden\npacked with all kinds of features (most of which probably have little\nmeaning beyond their apparent beauty unless you're into the whole Buddhist\nthing). It's really<\/span> quite nice, but in this respect Giouji has the edge for\nme because it's serenity incarnate.<\/p>\n\n

In any case, the Hougon'in Temple is a beautiful,<\/span> pleasant place to visit....<\/p>\n\n\n
