Today was entirely miserable, weather wise, with an unrelenting rain\nthat just would not, er, relent. The rainy<\/span> season has started, where the\nkey phrase seems to be “100” (at which the temperature, humidity, and\nchance of rain converge and stay). At least<\/span> it should finish by.... oh....\nAugust.<\/p>\n\n

Having noticed the\nHougon'in Temple<\/a> (\u5b9d\u53b3\u9662)<\/span> while in the Arashiyama area of Kyoto\nyesterday, and finding out that it was about to close to the public for the\nsummer, I wanted<\/span> to pay it a visit.<\/span> It's open through<\/span> Sunday, but I wanted<\/span>\nto avoid the weekend crowds, and I thought<\/span> a garden<\/span> temple might have a\nnice<\/span> ambiance in the rain, so decided it had to be today.<\/p>\n\n

I went with a huge umbrella, a rain jacket, and my D200<\/a>. It was somewhat<\/span>\nawkward trying to hold the umbrella while shooting, and I got<\/span> wet anyway. A little<\/span> rain shouldn't hurt the D200 because it's weather sealed, so I\neventually<\/span> gave up on the umbrella.<\/p>\n\n

I kept the lens hood on the Nikkor 17<\/span>-55\/2.8<\/a>, which\nkept the glass free of water. Everything got wet, but worked fine.<\/p>\n\n

The Hougon'in Temple was small but nice. It had a<\/span> very different feel\nfrom the Giouji Temple<\/a>\nthree quarters of a mile<\/span> away, the latter being off the beaten path and\noriginally designed for self enjoyment. It seems<\/span> that Hougon'in was\ndesigned for the public to enjoy, and it has a wide<\/span> variety of garden\nfeatures and statues and such.<\/p>\n\n

The leaf in the center of the picture above turns brilliantly yellow in\nthe fall (see the first pic on this post<\/a>), while the momiji<\/a> at left will turn\nsome vigorous shade of red or orange (see the background leaves in this post<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

On the way home, I passed<\/span> a private<\/span> residence with many odd flowers in\nfront, including the water-laden pinkish redish ones seen below.<\/p>\n\n

Here's the front to someone else's house. It's got a<\/span> certain “modern\ntraditional” minimalistic Japanese flair to it.<\/p>\n\n
