In the post yesterday about my trip to Giouji Temple<\/a> (\u7947\u738b\u5bfa)<\/span> in\nwestern Kyoto, I commented<\/span> about the formal entry gate (seen in the\nbackground of the second photo on that post). The picture<\/span> above is the view\nof the gate while looking over the little door in the front wall.<\/p>\n\n

The formal entry gate, having no doors to be closed or locked, seems to\nserve no practical function whatsoever. It just looks<\/span> nice. Well, I guess<\/span> on a rainy<\/span> day it might provide some protection, but that's about it. It just looks<\/span> nice.<\/p>\n\n

You can see above how thick the thatched roof is... perhaps a foot<\/span> thick.<\/p>\n\n

Yesterday was an overcast, somewhat blustery day that felt like rain\nwould come at any moment (although it never did), so it was somewhat dark\nto begin with, and much more so under the dense tree cover in the temple\narea. So even with<\/span> a fast<\/span> f\/2.8 lens and sensitivity pushed up to ISO 800, I still<\/span> suffered long shutter times like the 1<\/sup>\/<\/big>13 sec\nof the shot above. Because I was<\/span> doing this all handheld (tripods are not\nallowed), some results were clearly fuzzy (er, so to speak).<\/p>\n\n

Still, I felt that<\/span> both I and<\/span> the camera were “in the zone”\nbecause some shots were really crisp and didn't show any of the high-ISO\nnoise that the Nikon\nD200<\/a> is known for and that I frequently<\/span> see in practice (although the\nlack of noise could be the new noise reduction of the beta of Lightroom<\/a> version 1.1 that\nI'm currently testing).<\/p>\n\n

One such “in the zone” shot is the next one, also at\n1<\/sup>\/<\/big>13 sec, completely handheld. The fuzzy<\/span> shot above\nis just to show the context of this one, taken while directly facing the\nwall edge on. I wanted<\/span> to show the construction: bamboo top, wooden\n“roof,” and thatched wall.<\/p>\n\n

I really love how they let the construction return to nature. The one above<\/span> seems to be relatively new, with minimal rotting and minimal moss. Yet turning<\/span> around from that position to see the opposite wall shows a much<\/span>\nolder one in an advanced state of serene....<\/p>\n\n

The shot above was another “in the zone” shot, handheld at\n1<\/sup>\/<\/big>8 sec yet crisp even at full resolution.<\/p>\n\n

Looking further down the same wall, three's a section<\/span> that was built around a tree,<\/span> which I thought<\/span> was interesting<\/p>\n\n
