As part of Aunt\nJeannette's visit to Kyoto<\/a>, Anthony and I tagged<\/span> along on one of her\ntour days, which brought me to the Kiyomizu Temple<\/a> (\u6e05\u6c34\u5bfa)<\/span>\nfor the first time in many years. I really<\/span> have no excuse for not visiting\nsooner, since it's just a mile<\/span> away.<\/p>\n\n

These days, this temple seems to be known among foreign tourists mostly\nbecause it's included among some company's “new\nseven wonders of the world” profit campaign<\/a>. Both the campaign and this\ntemple's inclusion in such a list<\/span> seem like a total<\/span> crock to me, but the\ntemple is wonderful nevertheless.<\/p>\n\n\n

There are dozens of buildings in the temple complex, the one above being\nsome minor outlying building or something.<\/p>\n\n

Looking back from further on in back toward the main temple, you can see\nhow it's propped up on the mountain side.<\/p>\n\n

The big white building in the background is, I think,<\/span> the\nrecently-completed cover for the main hall of the Hongan Temple<\/a>, 1.9 miles\n(3km) away. It's absolutely<\/span> huge, being 100 meters deep, by 75 meters wide,\nby really really tall.<\/p>\n\n

Well, since water's not passing through the face, I guess<\/span> “gargoyle” is\nnot technically accurate, but I don't<\/span> know what else to call it. The gutter<\/span> downspout was somewhat orangeish, but otherwise this roof was almost\ncompletely devoid of color, so I thought<\/span> to give it a black<\/span> and\nwhite rendition.<\/p>\n\n\n

I don't know the people doing the stereotypical Japanese “peace” photo\npose, but I thought<\/span> this view nicely gave a sense<\/span> of the temple's location\nto Greater Kyoto, with Kyoto Tower and JR Kyoto Station about 1.6\nmiles (2.5km) west-south-west<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
