Today, <span class='nobr'>I was surprised<\/span> by something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>My wife has her <a href=\"http:\/\/mail.yahoo.co.jp\">Yahoo! Mail Japan<\/a>\naccount set to alert her via cell-phone text messaging when she receives <span class='nobr'>a\nnew<\/span> email message. Thus, when she gets <span class='nobr'>a new<\/span> email, her cell phone\neventually chimes. This is pretty standard stuff.<\/p>\n\n<p>So, when I sent her a message about a <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/users\/kalyan\/\">friend's blog with some\nspectacular photos<\/a>, <span class='nobr'>I wasn't<\/span> surprised to hear her phone chime. <span class='nobr'>I\nwasn't<\/span> surprised that my keystrokes on my Mac laptop in my living room in\nKyoto went via WiFi to my home network, then up the fiber link to my\nprovider, across the Pacific to my server in California, and then as an\nemail message back off across the Pacific to Yahoo! Japan, which then sent\nan email to my wife's cell provider, which then traveled the cell-phone\nsystem (<span class='nobr'>I have<\/span> no clue about that) to <span class='nobr'>a cell<\/span> near us, then to her phone,\nand voila, the chime.<\/p>\n\n<p>What surprised me is that it took <b>three seconds<\/b> from my hitting\n&#8220;send&#8221; to the chime.
