While on a drive in the mountains of northern Kyoto today, we came across\na pretty<\/span> scene... a small<\/span> watter-filled field of wilty-looking purple\nflowers, with a backdrop<\/span> of the sun setting behind some mountains.<\/p>\n\n

To me they were “wilty-looking purple flowers,” but Fumie guessed they\nwere one of three kinds of flowers, each of which turns out to be an iris\nof some sort when I look<\/span> up the Japanese names she offered.<\/p>\n\n\n

The field held a grave marker for a Hideo<\/span> Kubo, who was (according to\nthe stone) rather high up in the Japanese Navy at some point in his life. The Japanese<\/span> Navy hasn't existed since WWII (Japan now has a “Maritime Self\nDefense Force<\/a>” rather than a Navy<\/span>).<\/p>\n\n

The stone doesn't say when he passed, but the condition of the stone\nsuggests closer to now than to WWII; just because the stone mentions his\nWWII (or prior) military service doesn't mean that he died while in the\nNavy, but merely that he wanted to be remembered that way.<\/p>\n\n

Turning around and looking the other way shows part of a very<\/span> typical\nmountain village, with a garden<\/span> and a sturdy<\/span> modernish house in the\nforeground, with more traditional Japanese countryside houses and some rice\nfields further back.<\/p>\n\n
