That's Mt. Furano and a host of other peaks, 15 miles in the distance. The view from<\/span> our 8th<\/sup>-floor hotel room on our trip to Hokkaido<\/a> was\nwonderful. We stayed<\/span> at the New\nFurano Prince Hotel<\/a>, which is not to be confused with the non-new one\nsome distance away.<\/p>\n\n

As I mentioned in a\npost<\/span><\/a> the other day, I love how<\/span> low-angle shots like these really\ncompress distance, especially all the tracts of farmland in the foreground.<\/p>\n\n

As for the hills, the near edge of the hills in the shot above are 4 miles\naway, but the dark\nsquare patch of trees<\/a> in the upper-left is 11 miles away. (There's\nquite a bit<\/span> of farming in between the two, hidden behind the hills).<\/p>\n\n

In the lower-right of the first shot above, you can see a path<\/span> heading\naway from the hotel. That's the path in the shot above, looking back on the hotel.<\/p>\n\n

It's also the path that heads a short<\/span> distance to the “Mori no\nTokei” coffee house (\u68ee\u306e\u6642\u8a08<\/span> — Timepiece of the Woods), a cafe<\/span>\nmade famous by it being the main setting for the recent Japanese drama\n“Yasashii Jikan” (\u512a\u3057\u3044\u6642\u9593<\/span>— Tender Time). I watched<\/span> the\nfirst episode just prior to this trip, and it looked interesting. Its cinematography<\/span> was just wonderful. (This area, Furano City, is apparently\nstunningly beautiful about 50 weeks out of the year, the week we were there\nnot being one of them.)<\/p>\n\n

The cafe was nice, and not horribly expensive (a cup<\/span> of coffee was 600\nyen \/ $5), but they didn't have milk on the menu. The waitress<\/span> actually\ntried to say no when I asked<\/span> whether Anthony could have the milk we'd\nbrought along, until I gave<\/span> her a “are you some kind of a monster<\/span>?” look,\nand after checking with the manager, she relented. Really stupid.\nOtherwise, the cafe was nice, and the coffee was good.<\/p>\n\n

We had lunch at the Furano\nWine House<\/a>, which is way up on a hill<\/span> and offers wonderful, panoramic\nviews. It's 50 meters<\/span> higher than the immediate surrounding area, but when\nyou're up there it feels much higher. Here's the view toward our hotel,\nwhich is a spec on the horizon<\/span> about a third<\/span> of the way in from the\nleft....<\/p>\n\n
